DO NOT BOOK THIS - Horrible experience!
This is not a hotel, but a guest house. There are 4 rooms in a residential building who are not managed by anyone - no service at all. They forgot to give me the key of the residential building and just provided me with the code to enter my room. Then I was left out in the street at 2AM in the morning with nowhere to go... As there is nobody working inside the guest house (no host) after 11PM, no one answered the bell, the calls on their phone or even the emails. GO AWAY!

The King bed was great and the linen very nice but other than that, nothing exceptional and not particularly good value for the money. The shower head was broken, hot water lasted for a few minutes then went lukewarm, there's only one dim light in the bathroom and the shower was very dark, lots of street noise, confusing locks, etc.

Very disappointed.
I have travelled to Lisbon often and have stayed in many different parts. The hotel name implies a central location, however, this is not the case. You are very high up and on the opposite side of town. I stayed in Room 1. This hotel is absolutely not 4*. I could see there were mixed reviews on this hotel. I made the unfortunate mistake of believing the image that the hotel website had created. The room was freezing. We had to ask for additional heating. The bathroom has no heater at all, and makes the towels feel constantly damp. Selecting a ‘city view’ room essentially means looking directly at a concrete building. The staff were very polite and did the best they could, however, major attention is needed to make this hotel worth paying for. I couldn’t wait to get home to somewhere clean and warm. I never write reviews. But I had booked this as a surprise for NYE and was left feeling very embarrassed. I have stayed in actual 4* hotels in Lisbon which have been more central, cleaner, warmer and cheaper!

Bairro Alto Rooms
This is more of a hostel than a hotel, but it suited us perfectly. There is no food on offer but there are many bars and restaurants nearby. There are 4 rooms on the ground floor of the house which is in a small road which is blocked at one end to traffic, therefore it's nice and quiet at night.

Friendly place. Good location but the shower in the bathroom has painted walls and lots of mildew. They no longer include breakfast. The room was clean and the sheets and towels were good quality but the mildew really got to me.

Nice location, unique style, but could improve
Staying at Bairro Alto is a nice experience. It is a lively area, but the windows reduced the outside noise nicely. The bedroom was nice, decorated in a funky way and with a very comfortable bed. The downside was the bathroom, which was in between some renovation, and considerably dirty. Dirty as in your fingers would get black if you were to touch the tiles in the shower, for example. There was also some loose sand on the floor; it simply was in the middle of some renovation work and not really fit for guests. The hotel staff simply pointed this out and didn't seem to consider it a big problem, though, which is a shame, because nearly everything else about this place was quite alright. Don't expect a lot of service, though; there are only four rooms, and there is no one available at the reception most of the time (they do come if you call, though).

Hotel staff should test new keys
The day of my arrival the hotel staff copied several keys, but did not test the ones they gave me. Since this is a small hotel, the hotel's staff is not 24 hours. All doors lock from the inside with a key. I was locked into the hotel so I could not join my friends for dinner and drinks. When I called the 24 hour number, the hotel staff refused to come in to let me out. They were completely unsympathetic the next day.
