"Perfect hotel in a truly perfect setting"
My sister and I stayed at Costarena for two nights and loved it so much that we extended our stay for another two nights. It's the perfect balance of being small enough to feel intimate but big enough to afford privacy. I simply cannot say enough good things about the hotel - my absolute favorite spot in what is newly my favorite place to visit.

"Nice beach hotel"
Hotel set on a beautiful palmed beach -- Playa Bonita. There's a surf school nearby but the surf wasn't large and swimming seemed very safe. Large lawn for lounging. You can walk the beach in both directions or take the paved path that parallels it. When we were there (late January), it was uncrowded. The hotel has a very nice outdoor restaurant covered with a thatched roof. Food is highly regarded but we were both under the weather during our one night and couldn't partake. Still, there were quite a few customers, some who seemed to have walked from nearby hotels. Our room was fine and the king bed was very comfortable. If you're considering a stay on Playa Bonita, the main thing to keep in mind is that the only facilities nearby are other hotels and a few restaurants. There are no shops, convenience stores, or ATMs. A taxi to Las Terrenas is easy to arrange but costs $15 US one way. If you're brave (we weren't), you can hire a ride on the back of a motorbike for much less. The hotel will arrange excursions to nearby attractions if you tire of Playa Bonita.

"Hotel is in bad area"
When we finally got to the hotel, we almost left to go to another one, as the outside condition is very poor as well as the neighborhood. We thought we would at least check the room out, as it was late. The room was surprisingly clean, large and the beds were great. We decided to stay and all in all it was an enjoyable stay. Fortunately we live in Puerto Plata and had our own car, as you needed transportation to get anywhere. We would think long and hard before we ever stayed there again.

"Nice calm hotel located right on the beach."
The hotel overall was clean and the staff was nice and pleasant. The area is definitely not a modern type of resort, it is a more rustic feel. The restaurant at the hotel was excellent but a bit on the pricey side. The quality of the food was excellent. The only issue with the hotel is that the location is a bit far from the town of Las Terrenas so transport is needed to get to and from the town, also to no fault of the hotel there are several run-down buildings along the beach and road near the hotel which brings down the overall atmosphere somewhat. All in all the hotel was good, clean, right on the waterfront, calm and had good service. They even had a bench swing which my wife and I enjoyed sitting on watching the water.
