“Ryokan experience for less”

Traditional style Japanese room with tea served on arrival. Hot bath in basement. Like some reviewers have said, it's a large institutional building for a ryokan but the rooms and service are great for a cheaper option ryokan.

“A wonderful stay!”

Wonderful to have a traditional Japanese experience - whilst we were the only non-Japanese staying over the 3 nights, the staff were unfailingly helpful in guiding us to understand etiquette and other essential things.

“Wonderful service”

While the Watazen Ryokan is located in a modern rather than traditional building, it still provides the essential ryokan experience at a very good value price compared to many others and, most importantly, this comes with exemplary service. All the staff and particularly the senior manager went out of their way to be helpful and informative, always with great politeness and an abundance of smiles; nothing was ever too much trouble. The indoor onsen style public bath is also great to have access to at the end of a day walking. Also, if you can't live without a western bed, they have rooms with these as well. The location is great - right in the middle of downtown, a few minutes from the food market and in an interesting neighbourhood to wander around, and about 10-15 minutes from the lovely canal. I look forward to staying here again on my next visit to Kyoto.

“Great location and friendly service”

This Ryokan lived up to our expectations. It was right in the center of old Kyoto and was very easy to walk everywhere we needed. Friendly and helpful service.
