The perfect ryokan

Great location for sightseeing & clean modern inn
Maifukan is our favorite hotel in Kyoto and we are repeated guests. This year we took/stayed in 2 rooms as we invited my aunt and cousin. As we enjoy staying in the heart of Kyoto and neighborhood which is typical and quiet, this hotel is ideal, specially, for walking to various sightseeing points of interests and various choices of restaurants. The hotel is a small and clean and staff are friendly and courteous. If you want elegant and gorgeous hotels, I don't recommend/

Lovely hotel
Loved this hotel. The staff were so friendly and could not do enough for you. The hotel has a great location, just at the edge of the old town and the beginning if the temple trail but not far from the metro. Would definitely stay again. Particularly enjoyed the Japanese pyjamas which were left for you which made a great photo opportunity.

Beautiful hotel in a quiet but convenient location. We had the most wonderful stay here. The staff were extremely pleasant and friendly, and very accommodating. The room was a perfect Japanese style, with really comfortable fouton bedding, and gorgeous sleeping gowns. The best part is the mini onsen you get in the bathroom. So great for weary travellers, and a special treat on our honeymoon. I highly suggest staying in the Japanese style room so you get the full experience.

Nice hotel in walking distance to many temples
This is a very nice hotel well situated for walking to many of Kyoto's famous temples. The staff was very friendly and helpful, the room spacious for Japanese standards. Would definitely stay there again and can highly recommend it.

Great location for exploring Gion!
The staff was very attentive and helpful upon arrival. We were quite early but they stored our luggage and offered us some free bottled water. We enjoyed our stay here and unfortunately didn't get to use the outside terrace as we were back to late each night to take advantage of it. The only downside is having to walk to the other side of the river if you want to do things later at night but there are definitely closer restaurants if you're just looking to eat.

Lovely Hotel close to many good sights.
This Hotel was perfect for our stay in Gion. The staff were wonderful and the most caring and pleasant we have met anywhere in the world. Nothing was too much trouble for them to make our stay comfortable and enjoyable. The hotel is clean and in an excellent position. Loved it and would highly recommend it to other travellers.

Cannot recommend Gion Maifukan enough!
Gion Maifukan is located on a very beautiful, quiet street in the best part of Gion. Unbelievably nice and professional staff who went out of their way giving us directions and restaurant recommendations. We basically picked it at random only knowing that we wished to stay in the Gion neighborhood. We could not believe our luck! Location, staff, comfortable accommodations and reasonable rates. Give this place a try!!

The staff here is amazing! Very helpful and kind and professional. The room was clean and comfortable and I slept very well. I had a Western style room. The location of the hotel is close to a number of shrines and temples and you can walk there. It's also close to the Kyoto subway line that you can take to the Inari shrine.

Experience the atmosphere of Old Japan
We stayed in Maifukan at the middle of September. It is a small hotel, well located in the ancient district of Gion close to Yakusa Shrine, restaurants, bus stops and a laundromat. The staff were extremely courteous and helpful. We stayed in a Japanese Tatami room for 5 nights - perhaps a little too long for the amount of storage. The room was a good size with a big low table and floor chairs. The beds were made up each evening upon request. The coffee in the room was good and there was a generous amount of quantity toiletries. We would love to stay there again.

Great location in Gion and very nice staff
This is a traditional japanese Ryokan where your room is made up of a little living room during the day (chairs with backs on them but no legs) and then made up as a bedroom for the evening (sleep on soft pads with down comforters). We stayed here for two reasons - ryokan experience and the Gion neighborhood. It is a great location - unique lovely quaint walking area. We walked to Kiyomazu-dera and Yasaka shrine and Maruyama park. It is very close to the area where they have rickshaw tours. It is most easily accessed by a bus from Kyoto Station and a little longer walk from the subway/river front area. The staff at this hotel was so nice and helpful. They opened the door for us every time we came in; gave us restaurant ideas, etc. My husband was on crutches at the time and could still get around this neighborhood area.

Had a wonderful stay at the Gion Maifukan. It was a bit difficult to find but once we got there, it was wonderful. The staff were fluent in English and extremely helpful. The room was a good size. The location was amazing - I cannot imagine staying anywhere but the Gion area in Kyoto. We were able to walk to so many different temples, the main shopping area, restaurants, etc. It was perfect.

The hotel provided exceptional service during our stay. The staff helped us book an appointment for kimono rental, as we didn't have access to a local phone during the day. All staff were fluent in English, which made it easier to communicate.

We were cared for meticulously!!!
The staff was wonderful--proactive. For example, although we had umbrellas on a very rainy day, a staff-member followed us outside and had us use the hotel's larger umbrellas. The free water bottles, wonderful snack crackers and instant hot water for the delicious coffee and tea made us feel at home and very cared for. The hotel was spotless!! This is not a luxury hotel, but it still felt great with all the amenities and care given us. Everything was meticulously done..

Wonderful hotel in Kyoto
My family stayed at Gion Maifukan in mid-May and had a wonderful experience. We stayed in room 405 which is one of their Japanese-style rooms. We found the room very spacious and comfortable. Komono-style robes were provided which we liked so much we purchased them for use once we got home. Gion Maifukan is a delightful hotel well situated in the Gion area of Kyoto. It was in easy walking distance to temples, shrines and shopping. The restaurant in the hotel served a very delightful breakfast that my family enjoyed. The employees spoke fairly good english and tried to meet our varied requests.

What a lucky find!
We adored the hotel. The staff were so polite and very accomodating, I was so grateful for them and feel it was the best I've ever experienced, as an example they would call a taxi for us and then walk us out front to grab the taxi to make sure we were safely on our way. They were also so helpful in calling the airline for us to confirm flights, restaurant recommendation, directions and where to rent bicycles. We stayed in both a Western style and Japanese style rooms, and I loved the traditional style room, the tv's worked beautifully and the lobby area was comfortable also. I loved the area the hotel was located as well. I would highly recommend a stay here and if I ever have the opportunity to return, I will most definitely stay there again. Thank you Staff! Perfect hotel for Kyoto and especially Gion
Fantastic hotel. Its not massively traditional but the service is exceptional. I have stayed in hotels across the world and this was truly one of the best experiences. Great location. Downside is room could be a little more luxurious but to be honest it didn't matter at all. Highly recommended.

Boutique hotel in the heart of Gion
Boutique hotel centrally located in the top tourist district of Gion in Kyoto. Gion is the old Geisha entertainment area and a charming historical area of Kyoto. There are many shops, stalls, restaurants, parks and temples a short walk away from the hotel. Other tourist attractions in Kyoto are easily accessible by bus. The staff at the hotel were friendly and very helpful with directions and any other matters. The rooms were a little small but still clean and comfortable.

A glimpse into the Ryokkan Style
If you are looking to stay in s traditional japanese hotel but are nervous about doing so, Maifukan is the place for you. We stayed in a traditional room and found it to be a great experience but still with the comforts of a western hotel. The staff all speak excellent English, the rooms all have wifi and television and the breakfast is definitely something to recommend.

I've been to Japan many times and this was my favourite hotel. The hotel staff were excellent and the location was perfect - In the Gion district of South Higashiyama. It was surrounded by many of the main temples and attractions and not too far from the subway. I stayed in the Ryokan style room and it was great - very big room and very clean. I would definitely stay here again.

We had a great experience here at Gion Maifukan. The staff were friendly, spoke English well, offered great recommendations for restaurants, made reservations and phone calls on our behalf, had easy to follow maps at the ready. Better service than our 5 star hotel elsewhere in the country. All three staff we met were truly exceptional. The location was excellent, walking distance to many of the Kyoto sites and the trains. The room was clean, well maintained, but modestly sized and appointed.

Awesome time in Gion
My husband and I stayed at the Gion Maifukan in early June 2014 and we had a fantastic time. The hotel was beautiful, the room was spacious, and the staff was so nice and helpful. We stayed in a traditional Japanese style room and were so happy with our decision. I would definitely recommend the Gion Maifukan to anyone traveling to Kyoto.

Wonderful hotel in a great location in Gion
My daughter and I spent two nights at the Gion Maifukan in May. The employees were outstanding and the Japanese room was very comfortable and clean. The only thing missing is a restaurant however there are numerous restaurants a short walk away. The hotel is located on a quiet side street in Gion within easy walking distance of several shrines and the main shopping street. I would highly recommend the Gion Maifukan for your stay in Kyoto.

Perfect location
This hotel offers a relatively standard but perfectly adequate room. The beds were comfortable and the hotel was easy to use. The staff are incredibly friendly. Free tea and coffee in room. The real advantage of this little gem is its location. It is in a quiet, pedestrian friendly, very atmospheric part of Gion. There is a beautiful shrine, park and temple complex about a block and a half away, and a very photogenic pagoda right around the corner. One of the main temples (kiyomizu dera) is about a 15 minute walk to the south. You can walk to Gion Corner, or bustling downtown department store areas within about 10 to 15 minutes, but this hotel is set in a much quieter area. There are boutiques and little specialty shops on all the surrounding blocks. we found the location absolutely perfect in every way.

Really, what made the stay so nice was the location and the absolute courteousness of the staff. They were so accommodating and professional in their jobs. Also, very personal and caring in their service. It was a great choice for us.

Pleasant ryokan with extremely helpful staff.
We stayed at the Gion Maifukan for two nights recently. It is centrally located in Gion, and there are English maps on hand to explain the neighbourhood. The staff were very helpful locating places we wanted to go on maps and suggesting routes. They also assisted in booking a (very good) tea ceremony lesson at the nearby "En" school. Bikes (a great way to see Kyoto!) are available from the ryokan for about Y1,500 per day, I wasn't aware of this until we asked where we could rent bikes. The rooms were very clean and the futons were very comfortable. The bathrooms were a bit cold, though, and the TV (with Apple TV) were a bit tough to figure out. I wasn't sure if English-language TV was available.

Staff failed to provide us with the rooms we had requested. So we had to stay 1 night to avoid cancellation charges. Paid twice as much as we should have, as we had to pay for 2 rooms rather than 1 family room. Next day, moved to Westin Which was much nicer and half the price.

We were after a traditional hotel experience. Staff were fantastic. Room had everything we required except iron.
