“Nice location”
Friendly service, tidy common areas, & small but clean room with a fan for the warm night made this an attractive place to stay just outside the walls of the old historic area of Canterbury.
“Great location”
Great little hotel, superbly placed for the centre of Canterbury.
“Generally quite impressed but ......”
Overall this was a good stay, helped by the very helpful and friendly staff and the large, quite comfortable room. Oh, and the evening meal was v. nice on both evenings (if a little pricey) However .... my room (number 6) had a window that just would not close properly, which was concerning and a bit chilly. Also, the TV reception was virtually non-existant. I did ask, but was given some explanation about work being underway to do something to something on the roof.
“Canterbury Hotel”
We have stayed at the Chaucer twice now. It is extremely British, on this trip (Spring Break) we seemed to be the only non-English guests. That is it's strength and weakness. The rooms are very nice, beautifully decorated but can be tiny-a room with two single beds is larger than a room with one queen-size. The plumbing is also English- nice deep tubs with two faucets and a shower that didn't work but management worked on it every day, sent for new parts and offered to move us to a different room. The location is the reason we stay here. It is easy to get to for Americans unaccustomed to English driving and once there an easy walk to downtown Canterbury, and fifteen minute walk to the train station for London. The restaurant at the Chaucer is good, and has a good breakfast whether you want tea toast and Muesli or a full English breakfast. We'll stay there again, we love Canterbury and find the Chaucer a comfortable place.
“Good value”
The hotel is need of refurbishment however the customer service was excellent! Ideally located in the centre of Canterbury with easy vehicle access. Will definitely stay again!
“Good Hotel, Not Enough Staff”
Comfortable hotel, with the staff totally committed to service but on a Saturday afternoon and Saturday evening there were insufficient staff to cover both reception and the bar. As a result I had no answer to the call I was waiting before my arrival and had to wait 15 mins before i could register and anyone signing in after 8pm had to wait until the bar staff were free. A let down for a hotel which could deliver so much more.
“Great staff, lousy beds”
The mattresses were so worn they literally threw me off the bed, as the mattress itself slanted into a parallelogram. Other than that, it was not a bad place to stay at all.
