“Surprisingly Good”

I think of this hotel as a transit hotel - a place you stop in on your way somewhere else. That said - the service was excellent and personal. The family room was big enough for our family of 4, including 1 overly tall husband and one overly tall teenage son. Breakfast was delicious (great coffee), served promptly and enought food for said oversized men. And that was the continental! They even prepared us pack lunches (as we were walking on the North Downs Way) at a very reasonable charge. We really enjoyed our short stay and would highly recommend it.

“Dreadful experience - Obnoxious hostess.”

Ater a harrowing 5 hr journey from the north, we arrived in Ashford. It was very difficut to locate Downview as there were no lit signs or posting hence impossible to spot in the dark. We tried calling but the phone rang out. Finally, we stumbled onto the guesthouse and turned into a dark drive way. The doors were locked and lobby unmanned. We pressed the intercom and were greeted by an exasberated sleepy voice, who let us in. We were met by the hostess, in a short dressing gown, who made us feel extremely uncomfortable and unwelcome. Her mannerism was brusque and voice dripped with contempt. We apologised for the lateness and advised we were booked for the night. She promptly replied "yes- but that was for yesterday" confused we confirmed the date of the booking at which point she looked at the clock, it was now past midnight , and retorted the booking for for the prev. day!! She handed us a set of keys stating the room no. To our horrow after trying to open the door to that room, it was occupied, some-one was already in that room. Having checked, the keys were for the next room! By this time we were exhuasted, thoroughly disappointed with Downsview and extremely upset at the way we had been treated. All in all - An expensive guest house, a rude hostess, a bad experience! We suggest that Downsview makes it clear when advertising that they preffer guests to arrive early as the host/ess retire before midnight, irrespective of day, hence latecomers are not tolerated.
