“Great Experience”
The check-in staff was friendly. We were upgraded from "garden view" to "ocean view". The two bedroom condo we stayed in was bright, clean, and pleasantly updated in appearance. The kitchen was well-equipped. The location was quiet and peaceful with beautiful open-water views.
“Solid condo choice in Poipu”
If you're going to stay in Poipu, you can go for a hotel or a condo like the Makahuenas. The condo offers a bit less of a touristy feel. You might even run into people who own the units who have good advice on where to go or what to do. If you're set on a condo, this is a great option. Why a condo? More space, a full kitchen, and a dining table. We didn't cook, per se, but it was nice to have a full fridge, microwave, a toaster, flatware, etc. for the few meals we prepared or the left-overs we had. Hawaii can be expensive, so preparing a few meals can save a lot. If you're traveling as a family, you get nicely separated bedrooms and in our case, 2.5 bathrooms. The unit we were in was well-appointed - no overly kitschy stuff and nice furniture, but mileage will vary by unit. Location: The location in Poipu, while not on a beach, is on the oceanfront. There's a steep and dangerous (but fenced) cliff right off the property, which makes for great wave watching, particularly when stormy. If you can't fall asleep to waves, then maybe this isn't for you. I personally love it. The property is a few minutes' drive from local shops & restaurants, as well as Poipu Beach, even at 25 mph, the local speed limit. It's just 4-5 minutes more to Koloa and a few more shops and restaurant options. Note: Be aware that maid service is not like at a hotel. We got a refresh of towels, but otherwise, you have to schedule service for a nominal fee. We never did.
“Not impressed”
Easy check-in. However, we did not like our hotel room especially because the window screens were not intact--there were huge gaps between window and screen, allowing bugs to come in--and I just cannot stand mosquitoes, so this was a huge bummer. But the manager was accomodating in that he let us tour another room that was available to give us a choice between the two. Unfortunately, we found that the same problem with the second room as well, so we did not switch. The hotel room, furniture, and appliances were definitely overused and outdated. It was spacious, but we were out a lot (rarely there) since we did not feel comfortable inside. Good location though as it was right by the water (we saw two huge turtles!!) and it was a little farther away from the crowds in Poipu.
“Just satisfied”
Bathroom toilet overflow a couple of times and because the office was closed I couldn't call no one, so I had to plunged the toilet multiple times myself and the toilet made a sqeeky sound after every flush. The sheets smelled like the sheets got wet and they just threw it on top the bed and it wasnt refreashing. Also at night, I didnt have hot water.
“Good Ocean View”
Enjoyed the immenities just like home. The washer and dryer was great. The privacy and layout of the Condo was great, stayed in a two bedroom. They had everything you needed in the kitchen. However, upon arrival there was a musty smell but knowing when to open the windows and screen door was helpful. Had a nice walking trail down the Shipwreck Beach. Was able to view turtles and whales. The pool and hot tub was also well kept. Would consider staying here again, but maybe oceanfront vs oceanview.
“Would not go back”
Our ground floor unit was like an oven, no cross ventilation.I am from the Gulf coast...and this place was HOT. Asked for another unit and was given one on the 3rd floor...nice breeze.Unit was relaxing, view is breathtaking. We had fun climbing on the lava rocks. No place to swim.
“nice location, poor management”
This was our second visit to Kauai and Poipu this year. We chose the Makahuena condo because it was one of the few places that offered 3 bedrooms. The location was nice and we had a beautiful view of the ocean. However, the grounds are not kept up with the neighborhood. The rooms were clean, but there was no room service. The manager was nice and said they service rooms every 4 days, including fresh towels. We gave $20 to the room service to bring us fresh towels for the second day and later decided to wash our towels daily but the room service never showed-up in our 6 nights stay to take out trash or change the sheets. The outside grounds show neglect, especially when compared the the nicely kept properties around. The owners of this condo should seriously think about changing the property management. If you do not need 3 bedrooms, stay in Castle Kiahuna Plantation bungalows - it is much nicer.
“Sarah, Missoula, Mt”
Great spot on Makahuena point, close proximity to Poipu beach and great hiking trials. Abundance of Green Sea Turtles, great sunsets. Condo was great , very comfortable, although ,dated and "maid "service was sparse. there were washer /dryer and nice secluded pool. Had a great trip
“condo”
The staff was not friendly the room was great but the pool was good it was in a good location
“Shabby at Best”
Although the buildings and grounds were well maintained and the location was lovely our particular condo was dismal. Run down and not so clean furnishings. The beds in the second bedroom were worn out and had bad odors. Both bathroom were in need of overhaul and the toilet ran constantly. The unit boasted of direct dial phones although it never worked once. We were there for 8 days and the maid service never changed the sheets on the bed even once, though she did make the bed daily and bring clean sheets that was the extent of the service. The views were lovely from the balcony and the Poipu area was beautiful. The beautiful surroundings helped to make up for the condo condition.
