Not a bad experience

Posted 3-Nov-2014
Pros: Beds were comfortable
Cons: Maybe the breakfast could be upgraded a bit, more warm foods (eggs, bacon).
I wasn't expecting much from our hotel stay, just you're typical hotel stuff - clean, friendly staff, comfortable... What we got was that and a little more. Nice to have restaurant and bar in the hotel. Very convenient access to Hancock and Houghton.

Pros: cleanliness
Cons: Our check in could be improved due to no room available.
Location: Hard to find, poor lighting on the street leading to the Hotel
I reserved the room for a late check in on 7/16/14 or early morning hours of 9/17/14, for arrival after midnight as our flight arrived at 11:48pm. I specifically pointed out to Myra from Expedia that we needed a late check in. So when we arrived they were sold out and my reservation was for the following night. The receptionist was kind enough to call another hotel and again we called the taxi for a ride to the Magnuson Hotel. It was a huge disappointment at that hour having been three different flight to arrive in Houghton, MI for my brother's funeral. Otherwise it was a very nice hotel. I was informed when we reserve a room through a third party that this sometimes happens.

Nice hotel in beautiful location

Posted 7-Sep-2014
Pros: See above for what we liked
Cons: The breakfast and the pool area
Location: The Keweenau peninsula if absolutely beautiful. A must see. Quincy mine at the top of the hill in Hancock was very interesting.
We had a pleasant 2 night stay. Positives are it was quiet (surprising since our room faced the Houghton-Hancock bridge), clean, front desk was pleasant and helpful, price which included breakfast was fair for value, nice deck outside owned by the city but convenient to the hotel on Portage/lake or river. Cons-I should have known to avoid the breakfast burrito after the breakfast sandwich offered the day before led to indigestion, my bad. Lots if items seemed a little stale. Some may like very soft beds with thick pillows and a duvet instead of a blanket, but for us it caused a headache. Overall a decent value offering everything we needed for our stay.

Shabby Motel

Posted 9-Aug-2014 on Hotels.com
Reading other reviews I was expecting something slightly better than average. It is not. From the moment I arrived at the property about 11:00 PM to check in, I was disappointed. The check-in area appears tired, cluttered and generally creepy. I couldn't find anyone to check us in for ten minutes. The front desk person was attending to other late evening chores. The only reason I chose this property was because we could get a room with a view over the canal. No such luck. Despite my month old request, we were situated over the parking lot -- for which I'm sure I paid more than all the MDOT employees who apparently stay there when working in the area. The front t desk people didn't seem to know anything about the neighborhood -- as evidenced by my simple request for the location of a fast food joint. Even with the help of a computer, the person I spoke with wasn't able to give me directions. When we finally walked to our second floor room, we were surprised to see there is no guest elevator in the hotel. There is a service elevator for the employees, but nothing for the people paying the rent. We had to lug our bags up the stairs. The room itself was not objectionable. Certainly on the old and shabby side -- but we didn't expect much more. It was clean and the bed was comfortable. I have no idea why there was a hot tub next to the bed -- but whatever. I rate this motel a 2. It's a $39 per night property that costs $100.

Home base

Hotel is good and served as our home base as we traveled around the Keweenaw Peninsula. Only negative is that there is no elevator to help you get your stuff to the second floor.
