"Best bang-for-your-buck in Kyoto I've had"
We paid a grand total of about 10,000 yen for 3 people - a double bed apartment for my parents and a single bed apartment for myself. The rooms are immaculate and have spartan yet functional kitchens. It's basically like living in a bare-bones 1K apartment in Japan, for those of you familiar with Japan. I challenge any person to stay in a hotel in Kyoto for less than 10,000 yen during koyo (changing leaves) season. It probably won't happen. Make no mistake, this is a maybe 25 year old apartment building that rents out apartments. It's not a backpacker's hostel. It's not a hotel. It has shared laundry facilities. The hallways smell like a 25 year old apartment building's hallways. The apartments do not. However, for what you pay, it's better than any of the hostels I've stayed in in Kyoto, and almost as good as some of the business hotels I've stayed in in Kyoto, yet about half the price. The staff are friendly and relaxed, and speak English fairly well. Free laundry. The only real drawback was the location. It's close to Kinkakuji, but not much else. If you were using it as a base for sightseeing, you'd have to take a 30 or so minute bus or train ride in to a more central area.

"Authentic Kyoto House Rental"
If you want to rent a traditional Japanese house that is in a non-touristy northern Kyoto neighborhood, this might be your place. There is a limited amount of information on Expedia about this so I will try to fill things in. This rental is for a whole house. It has the feel of a cabin. There is one bedroom with 2 single beds. There are two rooms that can be turned into bed rooms with the two Japanese futons provided. These rooms can also be used for gathering in. There is a small kitchen, a kitchen table and full-sized refrigerator/freezer. The bathroom (toilet, shower, washing machine) is located in an uninsulated part of the house. However, the shower is strong and warm and the toilet has a heated seat. Door frames are low through the house and if you are over 5'10" or so, you will have to duck under doorways. The owner is friendly and tries to be as helpful as possible. His English is reasonably good enough to convey necessities. Heat/AC controls in Japanese The house is located about a 15-20 minute walk from the closest subway station (which runs to Kyoto's main station). There are also buses that are nearby. The neighborhood it is in is is reasonably close proximity to a bunch of Kyoto's shrines. It is also very close to a supermarket. This neighborhood/house is better suited to people who want to relax at night rather than go out and experience downtown Kyoto nightlife. It made a good base of operations for a relaxing Kyoto stay including trips to Nara, etc.

"Awesome hotel very close to some popular temples"
A very relaxing holiday, Kyoto is a terrific place to walk around with spectacular view, people are very friendly and helpful. The temples are amazing and each of them has his own character. It's definitely a place I would like to visit again.

"Good location and serviceat a good price."
The location was great, right across the street from the palace and only a short walk from the subway. The staff was courteous and friendly. The people at the front desk spoke English and were helpful. As a budget conscious traveler the price was excellent and the room was the best by far of the hotels I have stayed at so far on my month long trek across Japan(I am in my thirties and by no means a hostel backpacker.)

"A Bit Dated, But Clean & Comfortable"
We booked 2N at this hotel. The hotel is not swanky sleek but it is very clean and comfortable enough. The free WiFi connection is fast. There are even 2 computer stations at the lobby which is a plus if anyone needs to do some work. During the few days of our stay, it was raining and we we able to borrow umbrellas from the hotel. The front desk staff are able to speak passable English so our check-in and check-out processes were seamlessly smooth.
