Very nice, spacious, neat with a big garden
The house and the garden were really amazing. Common area was really spacious and the whole house is generally neat and well looked after. Iron, soap, hair dryer etc. all available. There was also a parking space. We arrived quite late (after the check in hours) so the owner left the keys for us and her phone number (there was a telephone inside the house that we could use which was convenient as we are not from the US). The owner explained everything to us and was very nice. We were there in February and actually had the whole house to ourselves. However, they don't do breakfasts anymore unlike it's stated on hotels.com . The only thing we didn't like is that on the clean bed sheets and covers there was also an electric heating blanket on top, which didn't have a cover on and felt unhygienic as it was probably used like that before. We used a small heater in the room that kept us perfectly warm at night. In general, we really enjoyed our stay and would recommend the place :)

No more breakfast offered
We booked this place because it was advertised as a bed & breakfast but we were told that they no longer offer breakfast. Well it's OK as anyone who stays this place should have a car (otherwise you can't reach) to get some food but I thought the way they advertised on Expedia was misleading. The place was a huge house with 6 or 7 bedrooms with ensuite and had a large garden. For our first night we didn't have other guests and the place didn't seem to have had guests for a couple of days before so the whole house was very cold when we arrived. There were a few fire places but we didn't use them because we simply didn't like to cause any trouble. So we ended up turning on a few small convection heaters in our room and the lounge which were not that effective to heat that huge house. When another guest arrived and used their room's heater the electricity breaker went off which made us to call the owner to reset the breaker. She obviously looked unpleasant being called after dark and told us to reduce the heaters, which was obviously not a welcomed instruction. Maybe the place does not have such issue during summer or when it's got more guests but we were not quite happy with the way they dealt with the situation. So overall the atmosphere of the place itself was nice and Volcano is the place definitely worth visiting but I would look for other place for my accommodation if you don't like to struggle with the cold house.

Felt at home
Lovely place, I wanted to experience what is to live in big island with the comfort I had at home, and I got it. This is a beautiful house surrounding by nature in the country side of the mountain, very close to the volcano national park. If you don't mind sharing a house with other guests this is a great deal and very good experience. The room had it own bathroom. Other rooms can accommodate more people, before making a decision you should call Mahi, very helpful and excellent people and customer service skills. Definitely for the price and experience we would return here.

Private and quiet Big Island retreat
This is a home, not really a hotel. We were the only guests during our stay. The caretaker (who lives offsite) gave us excellent tips on visiting Volcanoes National Park. The setting, while remote, was exactly what we wanted - quiet and private. Our breakfast was "make it yourself" with items supplied in the refrigerator. Downside: Had to purchase the coffee. We were really pleased with the speed of the WiFi connection; we were uploading our pictures to the internet, and at other places we stayed, the connections was too slow to do that. The house was pretty cold, but that is to be expected as the house sits at about 4,000 ft elevation. All in all, a very good value and we enjoyed our stay.

Damp cold and smelly bedroom
Impressive large family house with beautiful deck and garden. Well presented with a lovely lounge and dining room and all decorated for Christmas. The manager was very helpful and friendly with lots of tips on where to visit, buy lunch etc. Well located for visiting the Volcano area but the bedroom was cold and damp and smelly. We slept fully clothed in long thermal underwear and fleeces! The dehumidifier that was roaring away should have been replaced long ago and switched on a lot more. The bedding was very old, the bath towels too. Small investments would make this a nice place to stay but as it was, it wasn't.

Always came home to a tidy home ((stayed 2weeks) loved the coffee and the fruit each morning, Mahi always had sis festoons for us to do and eat out at. Local inside information. Went to see the volcano eruption, hadn't erupted since 1968? The lodge is very big and beautiful.. Hidden back in the countryside everthough the frist drive at night might seem far or like your lost it's easy after the first trip 4.4 miles excactly off hwy 11 off wright rd just fallow it up there's a left bend in the roads then about 1 mile there's a rt turn then a small country one lane travel it 1.4 miles look for the st sign that reads sleepy hallo slow down it's the next left driveway pull pup to the main entry unload then park into the marked parking area, don't forget to take your shoes off, local tradition..... Hidden Beauty in the Rainforest
The hostess gave accurate directions to get there, was very informative of which way was the best to travel depending on the weather, what to check out on the way there and back. Also what there was in the area to do, and what places we could go to eat while describing them perfectly. Breakfast was very enjoyable, and trying new things was awesome. To us it was a short drive off the main road thru the rainforest that was so enjoyable. The variety of plants, and smells we all enjoyed getting away to someplace quiet and peaceful. All of us had a great 2 nights sleep, the beds were very comfortable and the room was clean. I would definitely stay there again, and suggest staying to anyone going to Hawaii, especially if they are visiting the Volcano area to spend time there. For it was so convenient to stay there and see everything in the Volcano area.

Great Location
The owner is very helpful with info about the National Park and other sights in the area. The location is very convenient to the National Park, about 10 minutes from 'downtown' Volcano, at the end of a long, very secluded road. You get a room, with a lock on the door, but otherwise, it is like sharing a large house with a bunch of other people - there were about 15 guests when we stayed. I imagine the quality of the visit changes considerably when there are fewer guests. The walls are thin, so at times you can be very aware of the other guests. The breakfast - fresh fruit, coffee, rolls, yoghurt - was good enough. Don't expect a lavish buffet spread and you won't be disappointed. The best things about the place are the location and the friendly, knowledgeable owner.

Great host, eh bed and breakfast
The best thing about this bed and breakfast is the manager. She knows every aspect of the island and can give you advice on what to do, and where to go. If you have never been to the Big Island, I would highly recommend this location just for her knowledge (as well as the location). However, breakfast is mediocre at best - it is store bought, pre-made food and the coffee (considering you are on Hawaii) was pretty bad. The rest of the bed and breakfast needs a good thorough cleaning - there were dust bunnies in the bathrooms - and the carpet was damp from humidity. So if you have been to Hawaii before, skip this bed and breakfast. If you have never been before, stay here a few nights to learn what to do from the host.

Peaceful, amazing oasis set apart from Volcano tow
Overall, this must be close to heaven. It is very Hawaiian, so be prepared for slippahs-off, laid back, papaya breakfasts. Mahi was a lovely hostess and when there were no other guests we were given the privilege of full reign of the house. The house is about 6000sq. feet, complete with backyard swing, lawn, trail into private rainforest, 3 wood burning fireplaces, 2 person tub, TV and full kitchen. It was just wonderful, peaceful and the best medicine for whatever ails ya!

Peaceful, but not suitable for allergy sufferers.
The house is at the end of a quiet road, and has nice large common areas. Most of the rooms are quite spacious and have nice Hawaiian quilts. Our original room (the Kea'au Room) had a strong smell of mildew and was quite narrow. The manager (we never met the owners) moved us to two adjoining rooms which were nicer. However, there is wall-to-wall carpeting throughout the house (except the kitchen and one common room), and Volcano is a rain forest. Our son had the worst asthma attack of his life, and had to stay on the lanai or in the kitchen. Each time he tried to go back to his carpeted bedroom his asthma got worse. We had to leave very early the next morning, but the caretaker left out breakfast food for us. Unfortunately, the milk was spoiled (the best before date was from almost two weeks previous) and the cereal stale. Perhaps if we had been there later for the caretaker to prepare the breakfast, it would be have better. Even though we paid for a second night we decided to leave after the first.

Home away from home
We stayed for 2 nights in late April 2014. We like the place immediately once we found the house. It took us quite sometime to locate the house as it was dark and we were not sure if we were in the right place as it was in wooded area and away from the main businesses. The host is very kind and welcoming and went out of her way to prepare special food for me when she learned that I was on special diet. The property has its own rain forest! We felt like home so when we left, we forgot to leave the tips.

We enjoyed our stay very much . It was a little cold because there was no central heating, only a room heater. The house was also just switched over to solar water heating so you had to time your shower just right to have the most hot water. The house was very clean mad if had everything you could want. We would recommend this property.

Mold and worn out sheets
The Halana Hale vacation rental is in an absolutely beautiful tropical jungle only minutes from Volcanoes National Park. Unfortunately, the scenery is the best thing about the lodging. The place smelled very strongly of mold and must (which caused my girlfriend to have a severe migraine headache). The sheets on the bed were very heavily used an pilled and raged. I have seen better sheets at second hand stores for 50 cents. The breakfast cereal was stale, and the coffee was weak. I would not recommend staying here. I am sure there are better places to stay in the same area. The hostess was very kind, but it was not enough.

Perfect place for a quiet stay in Hilo
Wonderful, quaint, little cottage with several types of rooms. I stayed with a friend for 2 days and I would definitely come back here again when visiting Hilo. Perfectly close to the Hawaii National Park (about 15-20mins drive) and yet quiet and isolated. Decent dining options around with one of the best Thai food place in the world (something completely unexpected!) just 10 mins away by a drive. The beds were super cosy with electrical blankets and the property was very well maintained, including a hot tub! Add to all this an extremely helpful manager when it comes to suggesting trips and local insight, this is a perfect getaway from the hustle and bustle of Hilo and the super expensive National Park accommodations. The only improvement, I could suggest would be the breakfast, which is average despite the variety.

Welcoming B&B
My husband and I stayed here while we visited Volcano National Park on The Big Island, in August 2013. This is a beautiful big home, with several bedroom choices. It's tucked into a beautiful rain forest. We had a lovely, quiet room, and both slept really well. Breakfast was served family-style with delicious, fresh papaya. The hostess is extremely knowledgeable about the surrounding areas and the best ways to see everything. She had great restaurant recommendations, too. This is a B&B style hotel about a 10 minute drive from Volcano NP. It is on a one-lane road and difficult to find (especially at night!) but the rooms are clean and feature space heaters and electric blankets. Comfortable, friendly, and basic.
The hotel is a house that has been refitted to serve as a guest house. The rooms are basic, clean and comfortable. The caretaker is extremely friendly and has excellent suggestions of things to do in the area. For example, she recommended a guided hike across the lava flows that was spectacular, and pointed us to a number of good hikes in the national park. She also gave us helpful information about local restaurants. The lodge is ideally located for exploring Volcanos National Park. We liked the lodge, and will stay there again of we decide to stay up in Volcano. If you are looking for a more touristy, resort-style hotel, this is not the place for you. It is more like a pensione or European guest house than a hotel. We enjoyed it and would recommend it to others.

Tired Volcano Village Inn
The hotel is tired. But let me start with the positive. There are large public spaces, a hot tub, hot water and my mattress was fairly comfortable. The hotel is located in a fairly remote area, so the neighborhood is quiet, while still accessible to Volcano Village and close to the Volcanoes National Park. The caretaker is close by and quickly responses to calls. On the not-so-positive side, furnishings and fixtures are dated. On my stay, window blinds would not close, leaving me with a room fully visible to incoming guests approaching the home from the driveway. Coffee maker did not work on the second day of my stay and caretaker was out of town, having left no number to call if there were problems (like a broken coffee-maker, which is an issue as there is no place in town for coffee at 6 a.m.). Breakfast was store-bought bagels or canned biscuits. And the hot tub relied on solar power for heat, so on the drizzly days often encountered in Volcano Village, doesn't really work. Not at all the standard I would expect for the rate charged.

Damp and Cold......
We stayed at the Halana Lodge for 2 nights when we were travelling around the the Big Island.... There is not much to book in Volcano Village, the Lodge is set very far back in the woods of Volcano Villaage and it is almost like you are travelling on a deserted road. The inn keeper herself was very knowledgable and helpful but the lodge it self was cold and damp and quite uncomfortable, especially after a long day exploring the Volcano national park and all you'd like to do is come back to a warm and cozy lodge, this was not the place for that. We had the Blue Hawiian room with private shower and toilet. There was an issue with the hot water, especially if everyone had a shower in the am .... the first morning we literally had no hot water for a shower. The continental brekafast was ok... nothing special. If you were travelling in the summer time in Hawaii and were going to Volcano Village I would say that the Halana Lodge would be a better choice, but as we were there in March and it was cold this would not be a suitable location for this time of year (March 2013)
