“Condo close to Volcano”

This condo community is a little isolated (sine it is near Volcano National Monument) and could use some updating. But if you don't mind a little (ok, more than a little) 80s decor and a drive to the nearest anything, this is a good home base to see the South side of the Big Island. Close to one of the best black sand beaches on the island. Some units have a great view but the water is not close enough for an easy walk. The South side of the island can be very windy (unlike Kona) so no need for AC but there were bugs so keep those screen doors shut!

Area recommendations
Visit the Volcano Winery if you want to try something different -- like a Guava mixed white which was surprisingly good. Free tastings of more than 6 varieties. Not much to do other than hike and go to the beach down there so this was a welcome diversion.
Must see
Kilauea Iki trail in the National Monument was beautiful -- and short enough to do in a morning.

“Big Island Bargain”

Anyone traveling to the Volcano National Park and planning to spend a few nights in the area, the Colony I is the place to stay. The park is only a 25 minute drive from the resort. The resorts location is warmer at night and has less rain than Volcano Village where we stayed a few years ago. The units are clean and private. Many of them have ocean views or golf views. Everyone should take a drive of about five city blocks at night to the black sand beach. The number of stars, the milkyway and the meteors are amazing. There is one drawback of the whole Volcano Park area. The number of restaurants are limited. So, as another reviewer commented, bring in at least enough groceries to cook your own breakfast.

Area recommendations
I would recommend seeing the black sand beach at the resort, South Point and the Volcano National Park. All of them are easy to drive to, scenic and unique. A drive past Volcano National Park to Kapaahu is also very worth while. This area is about as close as one can get to the point where the lava enters the see. Close still means about one mile away. Anyone that really is interested in seeing the lava should take a flying tour.

“A colony to remember”

Colony I At the Sea is a well maintained, quiet place to enjoy the beauty of Hawaii. I would recommend it for people who like to be a way from the center of things. The people were helpful, friendly, and knowledgeable. We would go back in a heartbeat.

“Quiet, peaceful, beautiful surroundings, isolated”

Great place near the ocean to get away from the hustle and bustle and tourist stuff. Could use a bigger TV and more comfortable chairs. Very relaxing atmosphere with lots of things to explore withing walking distance-black sand beach, turtles, local shrines, rocky beaches, jungle type roads, etc.

Area recommendations
Definately go see South Point, It is a bit of a walk (maybe 1.5 miles to the south of the parking lot/boat launch) off the end of a small 12 mile road. Spectacular vista of the southern most point of the US and where waves come together from both directions. Very impressive and powerful. Well worth the effort and walk.
Traveller's tip
Shop before you get there. Load up. Limited shopping and dining nearby. Barbeques by the pool make it easy.

“Amazing location”

My wife and I stayed here for the better part of a week and we had very few complaints. There is a supermarket only 10 minutes away to stock the kitchen. The Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is also some 25 minutes away. The perfect place to stay in the middle of nowhere without lots of tourists!

“Nice and Quiet”

As long as you like a quiet out of the way place with no shopping or night life then this is a great place (that is what we wanted). I would go back again and probably will.

Traveller's tip
Get what you need before you get there as there is nothing but a beach, golf course and then the condo within 10 miles and even there, there isn't very much.

“Pretty well. Nice place.”

A nice place to stay for a family of four from Norway even if we spent most of the time travelling around on Big Island. But staying at the hotel you have to prepare your meals by yourself since there are no recommended restaurants close to the hotel.
