“Great time at Kona Reef”
We had a great time at Kona Reef. The location is wonderful, right on the water and very close to town. The condo we stayed in could have used some updates, the dishwasher didn't work very well and the fan in the bathroom was noisy. Other than that, we had a great time and will go back.
“Worth the price”
Very basic condo. All I was looking for was someplace to sleep and hang out -- nothing fancy. And this fit the bill. 1960s/1970s decor and furnishings. Bathroom was very basic. Bed was okay. Location is good -- right at the outer edge of the shopping strip.
“Wonderful Get-Away!”
This was the perfect place to stay for our belated honeymoon: close to downtown Kailua-Kona, oceanfront, and nicely (vs. tackily) decorated and comfortable. All the basic amenities, gorgeous sunsets, even a night-time lightning show over the water--stunning! Would definitely stay here again!
“Great views of Ocean. Great location. Nice staff.”
Condos are the way to go when on vacation. Our room had all the luxuries of being home. We were pleased to have a washer and dryer! The condo was beautiful and well kept. We had an ocean front suite and the views were incredible! We spent every night on the lanai watching the sunset. The condos are in a great location as they are within walking distance of downtown Kona. Staff was very friendly. Would definitely stay here again.
“If you see this place anywhere in your view, RUN!”
To start the staff was very nasty, and attitudish. Upon check in, which is 3:00pm no exceptions, we were greeted to a room (B-21) that smelled heavily of raid and other insect repellants, killers, or bombs. The particular room that we had, had no curtains, except in the living room. The shower was completely filthy, had a ring of dirt in it. The tracks of the closets had layers and layers of dirt in them. The refridgerator was rusting on the outside, so just imagine the inside. There is no room service, and when you check out, you are to do the dishes, because their maids, do not do dishes. I felt that this place needed to be totally rennovated; and so does the staff. The best place here was the swimming area, which you can view the ocean from. But hell, your in Hawaii, you can view the ocean from anywhere.
“One of the worst experiences ever!”
The unit, B21, smelled horrible when we entered. It was as though someone had spilled cleaning fluid everywhere. We had to open the windows as ventilation was poor, plus none of the windows had curtains. The bedroom sat next to Alii Drive, a busy thoroughfare in Kona so there was no privacy except in the bathroom. This is unacceptable! The owner of the unit left a sheet of paper stating the room had Wi-Fi and, after several attempts, we realized it didn't exist. The front desk staff were unfriendly/unresponsive and Antonio left us waiting outside for an hour to check in. This is not the usual warm and gracious manner we've come to expect when we visit Hawaii. Perhaps other units are more private - I would investigate that before committing to stay there.
“Great accommodations. Lousy signage”
There was no visible address when we got there at 9:00 p.m., and later learned that it's now called Kona Reef Resort, NOT Castle Kona Reef - and Kona Reef sign is half covered with bougenvillia - we drove by it three or four times, not knowing it was there, finally asked a 7/11 clerk and she guessed "half a mile" down the VERY DARK road. We drove into parking garage by accident and a guest told us we were at the right place.. The light outside our door was out which made it immpossible to see the code on the lock box - had to use light in cell phone. Mattress was VERY soft. All else was really fine. great ocean view.
“awesome location”
The hotel room we had was really nice and very clean. Our room was oceanfront, and the location was awesome right on the beach and right on the strip with lots of bar food mostly. Dont know if all the rooms were as nice but we were completely satisfied. We travelled the entire island it is absolutely amazing.
“The waves are calling us back!”
What a wonderful end to our Hawaii vacation, at the Castle Kona Reef. We enjoyed the Big Island for 6 nights after a week on Maui (we think that island is over hyped). The unit we had was so well equipped and homey. Extremely comfortable ocean front condo. What a joy to have breakfast on our lanai and relax every night before bed listing to the waves breaking. A surge came in 3 days during our stay so it really roared at times. It is a simple walk to the shopping district which is only a mile to the far end - we're in our 50's & 60's. Will we go again..................You bet!!!!!!! The penny jar is hard at work to make our next dream come true.
“Highly reccomended”
The Condominium is 3 meters from the beach, and is really near to the town center. Our room was the cheapest one (without ocean view), but the ocean was visible from the balcony! Washer and dryer in the room was also very convenient. Every 3 days they clean all the rooms and cheange all the linen (bedsheets and towels) I really reccomend this condominium.
