“Great Place”
Got a partial ocean view room. Noise was not as bad as some people said. Very private and comfortable. Would highly recommend it.
“Good morning, Mr. Turtle”
Eleven nights on the Big Island. Most of our days were spent breathing through a snorkle and driving around Volcanos National Park and venturing the length of Saddle Road and making it to the top of Mauna Kea. But this room on the fourth floor of the Kona Bali Kai had a balcony that looked right down into a couple of lava tide pools that ALWAYS had at least two or three turtles "doing their thing". The palm tree trimmers were working a bit early one day, and the swimming pool is poorly located, and the building is, indeed, showing a bit of age. But, my God, the location is to die for. This is now high on our list of "we have to go back there again".
“awsome condo”
Loved the Ocean Front room....Turtles were everywhere...
“Ready to go back”
We have no compaints at all, The room was adequate, clean, and the staff was very friendly. Very close to the beach, hearing the waves at night was great. The Tsunami hit while we were there but were only effected for one night and half a day, Conveniently had kitchenette and was used, Held down on the cost of eating out. Also had a call in dinner available, Ready to go back.
“Nice hotel, but...”
Our room was listed as a "partial ocean view" room. The good news is, we had reserved a mountain view room, but they upgraded us b/c they didn't have any more available when we arrived. Great! However, just be aware that when they say "partial ocean view," they mean partial. From our lanai (which is nice, btw), we had a great view of the main hotel building, but by looking under it through the columns around the pool area, we could sort-of see the crests of the ocean waves. We couldn't see the beach or the sky (while looking at the ocean; we could of course see the sky from elsewhere), so it was not at all what we expected from the room's title, though the title is, technically, a valid description. Between this option and a "full mountain view," I'd go with the mountain view next time.
“Good Value”
For a reasonably priced room in good location, I think it is a pretty good deal. Adequate parking and regular security visable. Our room with partial ocean view was worth the bit extra. Easy access to either the business strip and many nice beaches with great snorkeling. For people interested in spending their money and time seeing and doing things around the island rather than spending most of their time at a luxury resort, this property fits that category. This of course is a personal decision.
“Pleasant Surprise”
I needed a one night stay after staying at a luxury condo near the Mauna Kea resort (north of Kona airport) for 5 nights. My main priorities were a reasonable price and a location south of the center of Kona as near to Kahalu'u Beach Park as possible. The Bali Kai fit that bill nicely, being only about 1.5 miles from the park, and offering a studio unit at a reasonable price. Once I was able to move in, I was pleasantly surprised at the kitchen amenities, both as to variety and quality. Good size refrigerator/freezer; full stove with glass top cooking surface, the same model fancy coffee maker as at the luxury condo; built in microwave; toaster; blender; dishwasher. Pots and pans, dishes and cutlery all looked brand new. The furniture in the living room portion also was very nice and comfortable. (Murphy bed). The only slight negatives were check-in and air conditioning. I arrived around 12:30, and was pleasantly informed that check-in time was not until 3 pm, and to come back then. No offer to "come back around 2, and we'll see if a room is made up by then". On the positive side, they offered to put some items into a refrigerator when I told them that I had some items that needed refrigeration. The room was ready when I checked back at 3, after having sat on a chaise lounge on the lawn in front of the hotel reading and watching the crashing surf and surfers surfing. The wall mounted air conditioning unit was noisy, but fortunatly, it was not needed during the night.
“Fantastic Value on Alli Drive”
Alli Drive is an expensive place to stay in Kona. This place offers a fantastic value; each unit has a full-blown kitchen, free cable internet (bring your own AirPort Express if you need Wi-Fi!), plenty of seating and a great pool + hot tub area. The rooms are dated, sure, but who cares? You're in Hawaii. You just need a place to sleep that's centrally located, and this is it. It's most akin to staying in a studio apartment; no frills, but plenty of room, a full-size 'fridge, free internet and steps away from a pool, hot tub and the Pacific Ocean. I'd definitely recommend this place -- particularly if you're a larger group.
“Simple, clean, affordable”
Very simple, no frills, no unnecessary expense place to stay. No daily maid service, but they provide clean towels every four days and our apartment had a full kitchen with all the pots, utensils and dinnerware you could possibly need. The building is not brand-new, but the room was very clean. I have read other people's reviews about finding bugs in their room. Keep in mind, this hotel is located on an island in the North Pacific and many people keep their doors and windows open. That said, they do regularly treat for indoor insects, but I've had many trips to the islands an no hotel was ever completely free from an extra harmless roommate or two. No, there were no roaches, but a beautiful Gold Dust Day Gecko greeted us every morning outside our door.
“Excellent time and value”
We had the semi ocean view. It was more than semi and my wife enjoyed sitting on the patio to watch the sun set each night. The kitchen was terrific and clean. On the mountain side the rooms are 3 floors high and only 2 rooms per floor per stairwell. Great privacy and no noise from other guests. Our room was on the street, actually the main street of Alii Drive, so the road noise was heavy before 10pm, but the waves drowned out most of the noise. Kona is full of young building contractors, monster 4x4's and harleys blasting. The noise in and around Alii Drive can be loud but not after 10pm. We would definately stay here again. A true bargain plus a full kitchen too. Not a resort with heated pool, you have a warm ocean 10 feet away, no need for a concierge as there are plenty of tourist travel places on the strip. A Costco, Walmart and Safeway all close by.
