“Excellent leisure facilities”
I was very impressed with the location and character of the hotel. The leisure facilities were spot on. Small but well equipt gym, beautiful indoor pool at perfect temperature and one you can actually swim in! Sauna and jaccuzzi were A one and really clean. The changing area was immaculate - slightly surprised at co changing facilities but there are lockable cubicles if you are a bit shy. Pretty unrestricted opening times too which is unusual so since this is a big priority for me I give the hotel a massive thumbs up. The room was comfortable but tired. I found the bathroom dated and the shower was little more than a trickle - happily the leisure suite offered an alternative so wasn't a complete disaster. I had everything I needed (except a bottle opener) and found the staff very friendly and helpful so I will definately stay again when I visit Southampton. I was quite glad I wan't staying centrally when I saw the rather ugly monolithic hotels in the city and the drive from the centre is very easy - 20 minutes and very well signposted so no sat nav required. It was nice to escape the city for a couple of nights and relax after busy days and pretend I was on a spa retreat.
“Great for seeing the Meon Valley”
The hotel is in the country about 3 miles N of Wickham, marked on the OS map as "New Place", just E of Shedfield and just S of Shirrel Heath. The Marriott at Meon Valley Hotel and Country Club (inc golf course) is 1 1/2 miles away due W. Atul Kochhar's superb Vatika restaurant and Wickham Vineyards are less than 4 miles away to the W. Atul, star of "Great British Menu" does amazing things with Indian spices (have the taster menu you won't regret it) and the Wickham Vineyards wines are all superb and very reasonable. The Meon Valley Trail for bicycles and walkers can be accessed just N of the church in Wickham, a suitable car park is marked with a P on the OS map. The church is worth visiting for the wonderful alabaster tomb it contains. Wickham is just 5 miles off the M27 and Portsmouth is just 25 mins away (do go after 9 and get out before 4 to avoid the horrible traffic jams though). The Hotel is principally a conference centre based round an old manor house. Most of the rooms are in superior single storey and double storey blocks. The rooms can be excellent value if the facility is handling mainly day courses whose delegates don't require overnight accomodation. The beds are supremely comfortable. The breakfast is good and inexpensive. There is a reasonable sized subterranean swimming pool and gym complex. There are 2 lovely blue surfaced outside tennis courts, a croquet lawn and a full sized cricket oval beyond. Lovely.
“Happy!!”
I really enjoyed my stay here. I felt very welcome by all the staff and the grounds was beautful. It wasn't as close to Southampton town centre as i thought, but it was nice to travel away from the busy streets and relax in the middle of nowhere
“Feels expensive but has value price”
Extremely comfortable room. Location very quiet countryside. Has the feel of a very expensive hotel - so is excellent value.
“A very enjoyable stay”
My Sister and I stayed for one night as a birthday treat from me as her daughter had booked tickets for a show at the Mayflower theatre on Sunday 25th March. We arrived early (12 noon ish) as we wanted to look around first, check in was at 3pm. Our room was ready and we were allowed to check in early which was lovely and also gave us time to have lunch in the bar. The menu was very reasonably priced although the drinks were a little expensive. Lunch was very well presented and very enjoyable. We also had time to use the leisure centre which was very convenient to the location of our room. As we had to be out early for the theatre we were not able to have dinner in the hotel but enquired about breakfast which was £10.50 per person as this was not included in the special offer price. We were told to turn up at the dining room and give our room number, which we did. When we came to check out the receptionist said that there was nothing to pay, I queried breakfast but there was no charge which made it an added bonus. We would both definitely recommend this hotel even though it is about 30 minutes drive from Southampton, the setting was well worth it. The rooms are outside of the main building but very nice and the iron and ironing board came in very useful. Would have liked to have stayed longer.
“Convenient central location”
A clean and tidy hotel and grounds. The main house has a lovely relaxing atmosphere with good food. The grounds are large, but interspersed with other activities unrelated to the hotel and are there can be quite a lot going on. Very popular for weddings. Room are quite small.
“Prodigy”
Beautiful hotel, disappointed at the size of room and bed. Other than that great stay!
“Have been many times”
This is a pleasant hotel for business, with a good location, decent leisure facilities and a lovely dining room. Some of the rooms can be a bit tired but it is a comfortable place with a good overall feel. I have used it many times and always go back when I am in the area.
“Good if you like a rural setting and have your own transport”
I booked this hotel early and got a very good deal. I was therefore not surprised when my room was looking a little tired. I was very disappointed, however, at the cleanliness of it. I asked the cleaner to go over it, which she did, but the result was not brilliant so I finished it off myself (and I'm really not that domesticated). That said, the location is lovely and the facilities generally good.
“Pleasant experience”
Stayed over for one night en route southampton, very pleasing location and grounds. Had the whole pool to ourselves and would certainly stay again. Had to dash off so cant rate the breakfast experience.
