“Don't be fooled by the strange exterior”
The exterior presents a dirty highrise with exposed girders at the top, below the sign. But inside it is clean, well maintained, and modern. We finally concluded that the exterior was an artistic take on cold war Berlin, this being the Hotel Berlin, in the Berliner Tor neighborhood. The staff was courteous, competent and all with very good English language skills. The room was small, but clean. Everything was functional (which I am finding rare in hotels these days). The bed was quite comfortable. The breakfast buffet was very good. We didn't eat any other meals there, so can't comment. A short walk to the Berliner Tor transit station which is a hub of sorts. Also convenient to a number of ATMs. Small points. German hotels don't provide ice machines, but we were able to use the mini bar as a refrigerator at no charge. On the other hand, they could use more outlets for charging cell phones, etc. Most importantly for me, was that there are no nickel and dime charges so common in US hotels these days.

Hotel is central located and closed to a S/U-Bahn station. Rooms are clean, but small. The room assigned to me did not have space to place my suitcase. I asked for a bigger room. The price I paid for the room is border line.
“Not What We Expected”
We arrived in daylight at this hotel. I think at night you would not see the old and shabby furniture. The outside of the hotel was not in good shape either. Our room was a non-smoking room, but the carpet and furnishings were old and it had a peculiar smell. The TV remote was so worn, you couldn't see the what you were pushing. We didn't have breakfast included, and we were very glad. We didn't see that many guests at the hotel. The neighboorhood at dusk looked rough to us, and we asked at the desk if this was a safe neighborhood. It has seen better days. The staff was very nice, and made us feel welcome. That and the location of the S-bahn were the best things about the hotel. I would definitely not stay there again.
“Not Impressed”
This was far from a 4* hotel, and certainly not 'modern' as it claims- the decor was dated and tatty, room small and awkward. My room was nothing like the photos on the web. The shower fell down repeadly when in use and the toiletries supplied were laughable (one tiny sachet of soap to be used for hair and body). The location was also not very handy- quite a walk from the train station and no shops nearby. I would not recommend this hotel and think the rating needs to be revised so other people don't feel as duped as I did!
“Not a 4 star”
Hotel staff was nice and helpful. Location was convenient to train lines, but difficult to walk anywhere. Rooms were tiny - even by european standards. Breakfast was adequate, but not up to usual standards. Overall, an adequate place to stay, but not a four star hotel (three at best). Glad it was a short stay.
