Explore this historic star-shaped fort and chapel complex that reveals the military interests and biblical beliefs of the Portuguese settlers.

Founded at the end of the 16th century, the Fort of the Three Kings serves as a reminder of Natal’s rich history. It has a picturesque view of the Potengi River and is among the city’s most iconic attractions. Capture photos of the remarkable design of this fort, which is built in the shape of a star.

Admire the red-tiled roof of the central square within the white perimeter. Initiated in 1598, the structure was built from mud piles and sandstone and strengthened over 30 years. Discover the charming white chapel at the heart of the complex. Look around the small religious structure which has a ceiling that was used to hoard secret weapons.

Admire the well-preserved cannons that are 400 years old. Take a guided tour to learn from the docents about the Christmas tradition and military history in this fort.

Stroll along the beach near the fort for excellent views of the military stronghold, the river and the ocean. Watch the sky begin to change hues at sunset on this romantic stretch of sand. North of the river is the long and picturesque Genipabu Beach, with white sand dunes, palm trees and buggy rentals.

Learn about the context behind the historic military building, which was completed in 1599 by Portuguese troops to defend against invasions. Its name refers to the Three Wise Men of the Bible, because the fort’s construction commenced on Epiphany. Hear how the Dutch invaded and took over the region for two decades in the 17th century, before the land returned to the Portuguese.

Note that the structure opens to visitors daily from morning until late in the afternoon. There is a small fee to enter the fort. Make special reservations for large group tours.

The Fort of the Three Kings is in the Santos Reis area at the northern point of Natal. It marks the point where the Potengi River flows into the ocean. Nearby attractions include the Newton Navarro Bridge and the Natal Aquarium on the opposite side of the river.
