“One good night”

I chose this hotel as I had a gig just down the road on Queen Street. It has a charming old-fashioned pub feel, and although the rooms are pretty modern they've left enough beams and old windows to maintain that atmosphere. There was a log fire burning in the downstairs bar/pub giving off a wonderful aroma. The staff I encountered were very welcoming and efficient, though as I was only there for a night and needed nothing unusual I can't give much more detailed feedback than that. I walked up from Colchester Town Station, which is quite a pleasant stroll. Colchester Station is further off. I would definitely stay there again

“Very comfortable and good location”

Our daughter is a graduate student at nearby Essex University, and we wanted to visit her there without having to rent a car. The hotel is located about a 15 minute walk from campus in one direction, and 15 minutes in the other direction is the heart of Colchester town. It's about a 10 minute cab ride from the train station. The room was clean and totally comfortable, if simple. The staff was very nice - they volunteered to give us a complimentary upgrade to the annex building because there was a disco party in the main building that night. A very pleasant experience.

Attractive hotel. My room was good, but in keeping with most hotels these days the lighting was very poor.

“Feeling at ease in Colchester”

I had a very enjoyable stay here. Both the pub and restaurant were excellent food choices. The position of the hotel is great for visiting the castle as well as surrounding parks on the outskirts of Colchester. The historical nature of the building was an added feature as well. Nice fireplace, not a sterile chain franchise lodging.
