Beautiful grounds, sloppy service, food so-so
You have to be in Ghana to appreciate that although the hotel was a bit decrepit, service slow and spotty, food mediocre, still the warmth of people and the wonderful grounds made for a good overall stay. GOOD points: 1) Grounds are very green, peaceful and clean 2) Staff is very polite and pleasant 3) Beach is wonderful, even if you cannot get into the water (too dangerous) 4) Swimming pool was clean and well serviced BAD points (for USD$175 per room): 1) we had to try 4 rooms before getting two where the AC worked 2) some rooms had towels, others not; some rooms had water and amenities, others not; some rooms had windows that closed, others not 3) Food service was very slow - but that is often the case in Ghana 4) Food was mediocre, breakfast buffet was OK, but far from international standards 5) Entertainment music at night was atrocious, except for a special show put on for American visitors ("Year of Return") 6) Lighting in the eating area is depressing (mostly neon white, and insufficient in other places) Why not put some candles on the tables? Inexpensive and atmospheric 7) No lounge chairs or any sort of chair to be taken to the beach 8) Rooms are very old, tired; no beds for couples (we got two singles stuck together with two solid wood pieces separating us); windows and doors were not very good, so lots of energy loss; no phones 9) When asked at check out, we politely told the receptionist about problems, she nodded pleasantly, but took no notes...

Budget hotel. Very noisy location. Very basic. Loved the cook. She was amazing and should be a manager. She was the only redeeming part of our stay. No elevator. No hot water.

Great location. Great view from my room(#10) of the castle. Large room and bathroom. Staff was outstanding. The food was plentiful, tasty, and fresh. The air conditionner was quite loud so I was fine with the fan on at night. It was a shame that the terrace was not available for eating or drinking.

Rooms are old; location is wonderful
Can't beat the location. The castle is a 3 minute walk across the bridge that gives you a great view of the fascinating fishing harbor. The hotel building is old and attractively made of stone. The inside was a little old too. The first night I was there the water pressure on was a trickle although that was remedied the next day. Staff was friendly and helpful although not always around. Meals were good. Breakfast cane with generous sliced fruit. The dinner menu included Ghanaian dishes. I favored the Black Star over the red red Somewhat of a PIA was a hustler/guide in the lobby. Why do they let him be there? None of the liabilities were significant enough to outweigh the advantage of the location. This will be even more so when the upgraded deck is completed.

Not bad for a night or two...
Hotel is in s great location to the slave trade castle literally next door to it. It’s an older building so definitely some renovations are needed. Room was decent no hot water or shower curtain in our bathroom but we manage with the bucket that was provided. It gets really load in the mornings due to the locals coming out and setting up shop and going out on the river to fish. Overall it was nice. I will say this we over paid... the walk-in price is way cheaper in their currency.

Easily THE best place to stay in Elmina. The location is perfect, the staff are friendly and helpful, the food is excellent and the rooms are spacious, well appointed and clean. What more do you want? We just got back home an hour ago and we're already looking forward to our next visit.

This hotel didn’t feel safe. It was hard to get inside the hotel due to locals hassling us to buy things and wanting money. Also had to take a rusted metal bridge with large holes from the parking lot to front door. Signs posted inside hotel stating they are not responsible for items stolen from hotel rooms. We stayed about 30 minutes and found another hotel.

Hotel in spectacular location
This old hotel has a spectacular location overlooking the castle and the fishing harbour. The rooms, beds and bathrooms are large and cocmfortabale with good views, air conditioning and water heating are good. Breakfast has toast, egg, fruit juice and tea coffee. the evening meal menu is a bit limited.. Hotel guests can also use for free the facilities of the nearby Coconut Grove beack resort with pool and beach (about 3km away). Bridge House is a great value Hotel in a perfect location .

Nice place to stay
This hotel is conveniently located next to Elmina castle and a short drive to Cape Coast. The parking is across an old bridge which has the potential for stepping hazards at night if you don't have a cell phone light. The staff is extremely hospitable and took care of all of our needs. The restaurant food was excellent. There wasn't any wifi connection which would make a business trip unproductive but it was oh kay; my family spent more time communicating with each other. Also, there wasn't a shower curtain but I don't know if this is standard in Ghana as another hotel we stayed in didn't have one either. We took the opportunity to visit the sister hotels beach & pool for free and it was a nice day excursion. Thank you to all the wonderful staff we met at CGBH, they helped make our stay pleasant.

Ideal location for touring but a let down
I would have reviewed the hotel while there but the WiFi was down. They promised to fix it... The A/C didn't work in the first room, so I asked for a different room. The staff was great at letting us move. The room was nice and the beds were comfortable. The fan squeaked all night and the A/C was decent. I wouldn't call a beverage and 3 slices of toast with one jelly packet "breakfast" but that was what was included. However! The location was great because of the proximity to the sights. Near ocean front and short walking distance to the Elmina Castle. It was nice to walk along to river and see the boats coming in. The outdoor sitting area was also open and inviting.

Good basic hotel at great location
Stayed at Coconut Grove Bridge House in the centre of Elmina town. Bustling street life, traditional fishing port, and old European castle in direct view from the terrace. Very kind staff, basic rooms with all amenities you can expect for the price. The added value is in the location. Do not go here for peace and quiet, but if you want to experience the daily life at the town of Elmina there is no better place. If you want to relax on the beach and have a swim in a pool, or have a more elaborate dinner, ride horses or play golf, you can go to the nearby Coconut Grove Beach resort. Staying at Bridge House gives you free access to all these amenities at the sister hotel. Staff is very friendly and there to assist. Everything is hassle-free.

Best location for experiencing Elmina
Excellent location for an overnight visit to UNESCO Heritage site Elmina Castle and its lovely and lively bustling fishing town. The room was large with impressive views of the castle and busy river outlet to the bay. Comfy bed and nice decor with great air conditioning (a must in May). Water was not consistent, but I'm not a fussy traveler. Dinner was delicious-fresh grilled fish caught just hours before and served to the superb people-watching patio adjacent to the town bridge. Locals line the bridge as the boats go out (in the wee hours) and as they come in. Light sleepers might want earplugs, but adventurers can go out and join in! Felt safe and comfortable as an older female traveler (altho with a lot of experience working in Africa). Will bring family here on a vacation soon!

A piece of history
Can't beat the location. Room was quite adequate. Leaking toilet issue was fixed right away. The fridge in the room did not seem to work but I didn't need it so that was fine. One day without hot water, otherwise nice amount of hot water and water pressure. Breakfast of eggs, toast, fruit, and coffee. Restaurant is quite good, I had lunch and dinner there twice. I would recommend sitting outside so that you can take in the daily life of the village as you enjoy your meal. Most of all, the staff couldn't be sweeter. Always checking to make sure everything was OK and ready to address any issue, should it arise. If you are in Elmina connect with Felix and take his walking tour to learn about the village as a whole, not just the castle. His office (ecotours Ghana) is next to the bookstore in the castle. You can also call him to set up a tour. His number is available at the front desk. I would stay again.

Charming hotel with the perfect view!
The hotel is located literally across from the Elmina hotel and close to the Fort. You will have beautiful views of the fishing boats and sunrise/sunsets here! Elmina is only a 10-15min taxi ride to Cape Coast and by shared taxi it's roughly a $2 cedi per person trip. The taxi stand is walking distance from the hotel. Only complaint is that wifi only works in the lobby and restaurant has a limited variety of options. I didn't find too many restaurants within walking distance from the hotel. Their upscale sister hotel has more food options and is a beautiful resort but is a bit secluded from other attractions and a chartered taxi is needed to go in/out.

I have nothing but good to say about the hotel and it´s staff. They went out of their way to be of assistance. The location is beautiful and the busy sounds of the boats leaving before sunrise was charming. BUT the screaming evangelist on the bridge at 05.00 was indeed annoying. We complained to the staff and next morning, he kept quiet until 07.00. I will recommend this hotel to friends,

It was my partner's birthday and I decided to take her away to Cape coast for the weekend.I discovered Coconut grove bridge hotel with great ease and found the customer comments extremely helpful. My main reason for choosing this hotel was its closeness to Elmina castle. The staff were laid back but professional. Each night we stayed, a local band would rehearse while parading along the street. Food was a little pricey but delicious - highly recommend the Red-Red (Fried plantain) and beans, mmm! Cheap and cheerful! I will return someday.

Riveted!
I would tell anyone who was interested in traveling to Ghana's Cape Coast Castle and St. George's Castle to stay at Coconut Grove Bridge Hotel. It was literally 10 feet from all the fisherman pulling in their nets and directly across the water (and a very short walk) to St. George's Castle. I have traveled the world and I have to say that this was one of the most fascinating and colorful things that I have ever seen! My son and I stayed there in separate rooms. I had Room 5, which overlooked the fishing activity. The hotel is a great breakfast and I found the service to be quite amenable. When I wanted a driver, they found one for us to travel (day trip) to Kakum National Park for the canopy walk. The people who worked at the hotel were great, too.

Amazing Location
Coming to the hotel through the chaotic streets of Elmina caused us to reconsider our decision to stay here. But, then the reality of staying in a hotel room that looks over the lagoon toward Elmina Castle more than supported our choice. The room was quite large and comfortable although the air conditioner didn't seem to be up to the task of keeping the room as cool as we would have liked. None-the-less we would highly recommend a stay here because of the amazing location. We saw the colorful arrival of the fisherman with their day's catch and thoroughly enjoyed our breakfast and lunch on the patio next to the lagoon.

Perfect location for Elmira fishing village
The hotel is in a superb location in the fishing village of Elmira, this is the reason why I would recommend it. We got up at 6.00 am, the early morning light was magical and it was fascinating to observe the boats coming in and to wander the fish market. This was a memorable Ghana experience. Good things about the hotel itself: a minor problem about the booking was investigated politely and sensibly by the staff; there was some internal dripping from an air-con unit in the bedroom, someone came to sort it out immediately and was friendly. The bathroom was excellent - smart and clean. All netting intact on windows so no mosquitoes in room. Air-con and ceiling fan both worked well. Breakfast was served promptly on the terrace. This hotel is standard West African good quality accommodation. It is not really up to Western standards so I feel 'OK' is fair response. Main thing which needs improvement (as with so many hotels in Ghana) is the general demeanor of the staff which ranges from faint smiles (at best) to impassive face; this is typical of Ghana and it is so frustrating that the service sector cannot raise its game and provide upbeat engaging service in this country (especially when people in Ghana are so warm and friendly beyond hotels walls!).

Great location in the heart of Elmina
I would definitely stay at Coconut Grove Bridge House again. The staff was very kind and attentive, and the rooms very clean. Power went out occasionally, but that is no fault of the hotel. When it did go out, the generator was turned on quickly. This isn't going to be like a fine European hotel, but for Africa it is very nice. Also, the location is spectacular - right in the heart of things.

So the staff was very nice but the electricity went out in the middle of the night which meant that there was no A/C and no water to take a shower in the morning. I guess this may not be a crazy phenomenon in Ghana but when we asked we learned it was because they didn't pay their bill. Also they didn't have my reservation. The people were nice but management was not good.

if you're looking for hubbub
This is an oddball place/location smack in the center of Elmina life, which is what I was hoping for. We had a terrific view over both the Elmina castle (which was hopping at sunset) and the inlet/harbor (which wakes up early so be prepared to do the same). Service in Ghana leaves a lot to be desired compared to US standards, so factor that in regardless of where you stay. The desk and housekeeping staff here work and try hard. The beds were comfortable, not luxurious, the baths adequate. Not sure I can say the same for the kitchen, which had very limited choices at both breakfast and dinner, despite a standard Ghana menu. The biggest issue for our 3 night stay was that the air conditioning did not work in our lovely room, so it was extremely uncomfortable the first night. We were moved to another room - not quite as nice but still charming and somewhat cooler. My guess is that the air conditioning is never cold, just cool, even when it is fully operational. And note that the inside dining room is not air conditioned at all, which we did not mind since we took all our meals on the terrace for max people watching as well as breeze. A wonderful side benefit is that when you've had enough of the hubbub/heat, the desk will arrange a taxi to their upscale sister beach hotel, which is only a short ride and another world all together. Certainly a great value for the price, as long as you are up for experiencing local life up close.

Fantastic location in atmospheric Elmina
Elmina is a fascinating place and the Bridge House Hotel is situated opposite the castle and right by the lagoon which is alive with fishermen, boats, people selling things so you can sit in the outside area of the hotel and just watch the world go by and it is extraordinary. It is worth staying simply for the proximity to life as it flows past My room had the same view and I loved just watching the boats come and go in the morning and night What spoils it is the service. Working backward when we came to check out we were given a bill which included the rooms which I had already paid for. The manager had disappeared to "meetings" and I refused to wait the hour suggested for her return Eventually after much hesitation they let us go on our way after I had left a photocopy of the email saying " you have paid in full" . The availability of food was patchy- fish on the menu was not available despite the fishermen selling fresh fish no more than 10 feet from where we were sitting. Ditto tomatoes and other fresh produce. And any deficiencies took on average 45 minutes after ordering to be relayed back to us Meals took an hour to arrive.A request for coffee one morning met with the demand that I would have to pay for it as I had already had my breakfast ration ( I hadn't I had just walked in from a stroll on the beach) So yes go for the experience but be prepared to wait for everything and make sure you establish your booking status on arrival

Great experience for the price!
From the patio of this hotel, we ate dinner and breakfast within just a few feet of locals scurrying to prepare the boats to go out fishing in the evening and returning and sorting the fish the next morning. The low stone wall kept us safe and clean without blocking the views of Elmina Castle, the bridge, fishing boats and local life. The room was clean and air-conditioned. So glad we took a chance on a lower cost hotel and weren't stuck out at a boring beach resort!

A stay in Elmina town
The hotel is in the heart of Elmina's harbour area, with great views of the fishing boats coming and going, and of Elmina's historic castle. This is a bustling area by day, but quiet by night time. Few tourists seem to stay in the town of Elmina itself, rather than at the nearby beaches, but I really enjoyed walking around the town early in the morning and in the evening to see a real, working town. This hotel is a good option at a much more reasonable rate than the beachside resort hotels out of town. The hotel staff were helpful and friendly, and the restaurant food was good. I would stay there again to enjoy the atmospheric town, though you would need to decide whether you'd prefer to pay more and stay at a beach resort.

Great stay to explore Elmina, Cape Coast & Kakum
We had a lovely stay which turned into 3 nights at this bed & breakfast. For us, the place was just right- affordable and comfortable, located in the center of a bussling historic town, providing free access to a beautiful beach resort with pool down the road; & easily accessible to Kukum National Park & Cape Coast for day trips. Plus, the staff are professional and friendly. Just be aware that taking taxis everywhere will eat into your wallet. Taking shared taxis or the tro-tros is much more affordable if you're on a tight budget. Overall- staying at Coconut Grove Bridge House was a great experience.
