"Lovely hotel and staff"
Great hotel and well positioned - easy access to the town and it's attractions. Lovely view out of the window across the river towards the cathedral. Staff lovely, friendly and helpful. Room clean as was bathroom. Breakfast was very good. The only one downside was the air conditioning in the bathroom was stuck on. The staff moved me into another room but it was still on all night in this room to - I slept intermittently! All said I would definitely return to this hotel again when in Durham.

"Great get away."
Booked in for one night. Check in was smooth and handled professionally. Think we got upgraded to a larger room than we had initially signed up for as we got a large room with seating area, couch and coffee table with a large bathroom and jacuzzi type bath. Room was very clean although it suffered from having a few light bulbs out and the room was either quite cool or very hot if you turned the radiator on. Spent the afternoon having afternoon tea and in the pool/spa area. The facilities were great and staff very friendly. We booked into the hotel restaurant for an evening meal which was necessary as it was busy. Food was very good and struck a good balance of quality and quantity. The restaurant is large and we found that it did not lend itself to much of a relaxing ambience. Hotel corridors were quiet and did not suffer from noise from the rest of the hotel. Breakfast was of a reasonable quality although I would not say this was the highest standard of breakfast we have encountered in other hotels of a similar standard. Open log fire in reception was a nice place to spend some time after the meal with a drink. Bar drinks were pricey, but then again this is becoming more of a standard rate - single shot with a mixer £4.20

"Best of Both Worlds"
We came from Canada looking for a Castle experience. Lumley Castle was wonderful. The original Lord of Lumley Castle would have loved to stay there today. He would have had a clear view of the countryside with first class accommodations, comforts and service. It was easy to get immersed in the history of the castle, the grounds are very nice and we walked by the river. It is an easy drive to Durham Cathedral and Castle. Walking up the circular stone stairs to our room was part of the fun (but let the bellman carry the bags).

"The heat is on at the Durham Marriott"
Room was not ready for 3pm checkin although was given a complimentary drink whilst I waited a further 45 minutes in a rather bleak and depressing looking bar. Despite promising someone would come and tell me the moment my room was ready, this did not happen and I had to yet again enquire to be told it was now ready. Once I had encountered the many stairs and wrong corridors attempting to cross other to the newer extension with the river view, I eventually arrived relieved and shattered to my room. It was a lovely size, with a huge king size bed and overall very nice for a 1 night stay. Having travelled all day I was too tired to dare to venture out of my room again and settled on room service for the night which was very pleasant, except for the £4.00 tray charge. What soon became annoying was the high level of traffic noise from the major roads even the tv couldn't drown it out. Then every hour throughout the night I was woken up as the heat was unbearable, no air conditioning/controls seemed to work so I found a fan tower which helped to keep the room semi-comfortable. Despite being a Marriott member, and as we were celebrating our wedding anniversary it was disappointing to receive no complimentary wine/fruit in our room as we have received on previous occasions.

"Lovely, relaxing weekend break"
The hotel lived up to expectations. It was very clean and comfortable, a beautiful building set in extensive grounds. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. The food in the Levens restaurant was excellent. The only downside was the hour we had to wait for it to be served. However, the staff were very apologetic and it was sorted out to our satisfaction. There was plenty of choice for breakfast and this time we didn't have to wait! Overall well worth a visit.

"Nice hotel close to Darlington"
I stayed here a couple of nights while visiting friends, the Hotel is large with lots of space in and outside, I would have liked to visit it in the summer to use the swimming pool and the gym but as I stayed at end of November I didn't fancy the swim, I did not use the restaurant or any other facility as I met my friends in Town but the staff were very helpful every time I needed to book a taxi, at my check in and my check out! I would stay here again...

"Good hotel just off A1"
Needed a hotel close to Newton Aycliffe as we were visiting relatives just after Christmas. The hotel is fine, the surroundings are not too impressive; it's situated behind a 24 hour McDonalds and a petrol station. However, the fact that it is only 1.5 miles from Newton Aycliffe and just off the A1 mean that it is great for stopovers.

"Friendly, Quirky Hotel"
This hotel is very convenient for the airport and all major routes in the North East. It is quirky and a little old fashioned in it's facilities and decor but has a great sense of history as it was a mess for the RAF. The hotel staff a excellent, very friendly and rightly proud of the history behind their building. A huge bonus is that they welcome pets in all parts of the hotel but you wouldn't know from entering the building, no pet hair everywhere or smelling of animals. This isn't the most modern hotel but it was clean and the bed was comfortable, plenty of hot water and the power of the shower rates much higher than most modern hotels I've stayed in over the years. Room was a bit cold when I got there but the duty manger did sought that out for me. Breakfast is very good, plenty to choose from. There was only meals available in the bar when I was there, which wouldn't be suitable if you were entertaining guests, especially as there is a pool table with a huge TV screen that some guests seem to use a lot and can be a bit obtrusive if you are looking for a quiet drink. None the less, I was happy to sit there on my own with a drink and book & felt comfortable. Excellent value for money if you get a deal.

"OK for the very reasonabLe price"
Although we booked a twin room, the only one available was the disabled room which was fine except for that the shower and bath were impossible to use for two 6 foot blokes.
