It's a bit distance from Durban beach, which we don't miss anyway. Very easy location to start driving around. The room is spacious, easily accommodating my family including a seven year and an one year old. Breakfast is brilliant.
I stayed here for one night jn the middle of May. Normally I tend to stay in the same accommodation during a stay in a city but when I decided to visit Durban as part of a South African trip I fancied a whole day in the Berea and the rest of my stay on the beach and the areas outside Durban. This property is an old colonial house split into spacious and beautifully appointed guest rooms. The owners have done well to maintain a colonial feel to the entire location and the guests have access to beautiful and relaxing sitting rooms and reading areas, a verandah style breakfast area, a compact and attractive pool area and on honesty bar set up like an old style English pub. Colonial style did not mean a lack of modern amenities and free wifi, flat screen TV and air con was available. Breakfast buffet was very good, with cooked breakfast prepared and brought to me. This really is a beautiful guest house with a very relaxing feel to it and a high level of creature comforts. There are lots of dining and drinking options nearby. Although somewhat removed from the centre of the city, this is no issue if you have your own transport or wish to use the cooler Berea as your base in Durban.
Umhlanga is a suburb of the city of Durban. The Hotel is located on the Umhlanga ridge, and is central to shopping, business and beaches, and very close to the airport (15-20 minutes). The hotel is directly across the road from the very large Gateway Shopping Complex, and is situated close to many large business companies. Umhlanga beaches were just down the hill from the hotel. There are a number of restaurants in the Gateway Complex, and a short taxi drive could take you down to Umhlanga beaches where there are numerous other restaurants and fine dining experiences. We noticed many business people using the Hotel, and consequently this resulted in a very efficient service within the hotel.

This hotel was nice and had a nice restaurant and pool. There was safe parking. The only three issues were that: 1. It is a bit far from the Sea so you definitely have to drive to the sea (they did say they had a complimentary shuttle for short distances so this may go to the sea but we didn't use it).
2. Our room did not have a sea view, in fact our room did not have any view, the view was onto a tiny artificial garden (exclusively our units garden) but surrounded by high walls and you wouldn't actually use the garden as it was small.
3. It may only have been present in our room on the Mezannine floor but as we were above the garage we could hear the car guards talking and this was annoying when trying to sleep in the morning.
