Guatemala Hotels

I love staying here. Not my normal preference by type (a bit old-fashioned and formal), but has large comfortable rooms, a terrific pool and gym hidden away beneath the luxurious formal entrance halls, and attentive pleasant staff. Plus a good business center without at all seeming like a business hotel. Restaurants are good and flexible, and location is great for the city and close to the airport. Just plain good all around. (note: If you are strapped for money, you can stay at the next-door Biltmore Express and use all the El Camino facilities (for a minor incremental charge), but the rooms there are nowhere near the same standard).

I had an overnight in Guatemala City and this was an "Expedia Deal" or I would never have opted for it. The room was perfect: Quiet, furnished well, great bed and bedclothes, the works. I felt the restaurant was pricier than I liked, but there is also one of the best McDonald's in the world about a block away. It is on the edge of the Zona Viva, close the the airport, and the airport transportation was flawless--even though I was the only one in the bus both ways!

The room (a corner suite) was large, well furnished and very comfortable. The location in the Zona Viva was excellent and the staff more than helpful.

There are some minor things about this hotel that were slightly annoying (such as rusty water coming out of the bathtub, our pull out sofa was broken & construction noise on our floor), however; the staff and their attention to detail more than made up for it. The staff, the staff, the staff... AMAZING. Every single person was so kind, so helpful, so accommodating. The hotel itself is slightly dated, but the location and grounds are superb. The restaurant is excellent; we ate onsite several times for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The food was always very tasty and served with grace. The hotel is very clean. The pool is family friendly with a volleyball net, swim toys, and a shallow kids end on one side, however; it is "solar" heated so the only drawback was that it was a bit cold for us if the sun hadn't been shining to warm it up. They have a kids playroom, and large chess boards outside which were a lot of fun for our family. This hotel is an excellent choice if you have children. It is spacious, clean, and the staff was very accommodating to the needs of a family. DEFINITELY upgrade to the suite. It is well worth the money...the balconies on the suites allow for better views of the lake. The suite was much more pleasant than the standard room.

Hotel Regis is a lovely oasis in the heart of Panajachel. I have stayed there for years, usually one week per year. I must say that Clara does an amazing job cleaning rooms and is always there if you have questions. Clara and Felix (security) really make the place as they have both been there over 5 years. Everyday there was a new figurine made of towels on my bed. On Mothers Day a gorgeous vase of roses in my room. The price is fair, the building was constructed in 1934 so be prepared that its not new, but well kept. Emanuel at the front desk is very helpful. I had a massage but had to schedule it four days ahead as the masseuse Carmine was working at Hotel De Largo. Would be helpful if this was more eeady available as most travelers can't give that many days notice to book. Choose rooms to the back number 5 and up if you want to avoid street noise.
