Overlooking the Tagus River, this exquisite part of the Convento de San Gil is an aesthetic match for its important role as the parliamentary seat.

Serving as the region’s political center, the Cortes de Castilla-La Mancha Building is among the most iconic structures in the historic quarter of Toledo. The impressive facility stands on a grassy knoll that rises from the bank of the Tagus River. Stroll along the steep green sides of the waterway for a variety of vistas and photo opportunities of the castle.

Make your way around the resplendent Convento de San Gil that houses the Cortes de Castilla-La Mancha Building, which hosts the parliament of the region. See the structure at night, when it glows brightly over the dark river. The upper reaches of the building provide excellent views of the river and the green hills surrounding Toledo.

The central courtyard contains much of the old convent, while the church and the Plenary Hall are on the eastern side of the complex. Admire the church’s quaint façade, topped by a pediment and gabled roof. Enter through the rectangular portal to find yourself in the single nave that is flanked by chapels and arches.

Reflect on the rich history of the complex, which dates back to the 17th century. A prison was set up in the convent in the 1800s, before it served as a Guardia Civil barracks and, later, a fire station. Today decisions are made here about the area’s laws and budgets. Many archaeological excavations have taken place in and around the convent, leading to the discovery of Islamic tanneries and ancient houses, among other vestiges.

Find the Cortes de Castilla-La Mancha Building in the southwestern corner of the historic center of Toledo. Get a bus to a nearby station not far from the Tagus River and walk to the castle in a few minutes. Discover other highlights in the zone, such as the Plaza Cerro de las Melojas, the Iglesia Mozárabe de San Sebastián and the Paseo del Tránsito Park.
