“Calm, comfortable, intimate and welcoming.”

The hotel was obviously "refreshed", in the brightness and modern styling of the room. Every amenity was provided, the housecleaning staff was very responsive to personal requests, the concierge helped us out with our newcomer questions, and they seemed to remember us over our three-night stay with questions like how was the restaurant, or the shopping, or did you catch the right bus? The general atmosphere amongst the other guests was relaxed satisfaction. This is not one of the big hotels, or the tallest, but it is in the neighbourhood where they exist if you want to sample the other offerings. If you are going to experience what Chicago has to offer, you want to be close to major attractions and would appreciate pleasant accommodation after a busy day, I would recommend The James.

Area recommendations
Majestic Mile, or The Loop, for the availability of excellent shops, restaurants and the world class architecture. Simply walking in these areas is a visual treat. These areas are imbued with their history, culture and urban pride. Food, music, and the number of cultural centres, galleries, the museums and of course, The Shedd Aquarium are all local assets. The waterfront is not as compelling in the winter months and some tours are not available then, but in the weeks leading up to Christmas the city itself is magical in its Christmas lighting finery. Most stores will offer non- residents a discount option if you ask, and while the streets are crowded, and traffic can be an issue like any other large city, the mood is positive, friendly and helpful. Several times we were approached by people who noticed we were trying to locate ourselves on our map, and the reception in most restaurants was warm and conversational. I would assume these areas are fine-tuned for tourism, and they are well set-up for visitors.
Getting around
Public transit is efficient and accessible. Drivers are friendly and helpful and a "city pass" will save you a lot of money. You don't have to rely on taxis, although the traffic in the streets is easily 50 % taxis. The subway system is visually attractive from the street, and the "el" trains are worth using as your own personal tour. Buses are "clean" exhaust and the downtown areas are not as chokingly polluted as many other cities. There are paid tours you can take throughout the city and on the water in the warmer seasons. It's all good, and I would recommend using the taxi option only for emergencies.

“Wonderful Getaway”

I just can't bring myself to say anything negative about this place! The staff are friendly and overwhelmingly courteous--they really go out of their way to make yours a pleasant stay. The area is close to just about every attraction. (And it's down the street from THE BEST Italian tapas restaurant!) You can honestly access all attractions by foot, but the staff is ready to call a cab for you as soon as you step foot outside of the hotel, should you like one. Even if you don't get a view of the city, the courtyard has a cute little animation projected on the side of a building that you can look at when it gets dark enough. The Queen suite was a little tight (hanging television sets, so watch your head, haha) but the comfiness of the room and vivacity of the city made up for it. In my experience, I'd pick their King single rooms over the Queen suite. (I just got the suite because there was a deal for it at the time, but seriously, the standard King room was much better. You just get a bigger bathroom with the suite.) Still a fabulous place! Can't wait to come back, and even try some of their other locations!

“Best Stay”

Staff was overattentive and helpful on places to go downtown. It did have very odd modern art. But overall comfortable stay to where we did not want to leave.

Dining
I would recommend the restaurant Quartino 626 North State St. it has a wonderful special on Sunday if you want to sample different Italian food. And The Yolk for breakfast is out of this world! Garrett popcorn is a must!

“Perhaps Chicago's Best Boutique Hotel”

I had a three-night stay at The James Hotel and the overall experience was very pleasant. The hotel's location was perfect for the trip I had - shopping - and the friendly staff was a plus to the overall satisfaction. I would definitely consider returning to this hotel if there is another occasion for me to re-visit Chicago.

“Best hotel stay”

My family and I really enjoyed our stay at the James. The staff was very attentive. The conceriege got us free tickets to a comedy show that was sold out. We loved the treats that came with turndown service every night. We will definitely be going back to the James.

“simple, clean, nice”

Boutique hotel category, simple and nice but definitely not worth rack rates. Only worth it if you get a deal.
