Five star experience in West Beijing
Nice hotel with great amenities. Service was great at the gym or breakfast place. The gym is small but quiet, and breakfast bar had great selections. A five-star experience!

Old property but it's one of the few hotels that are allowed to accept foreigners in the area. Furnishing and interiors are definitely not modern but quaint nonetheless. Comfortable bed. Free WiFi worked well. Breakfast buffet was very good, with plenty of Western options and an omelette stand.

Disappointing
Starting off with the good. Breakfast was excellent and the hotel was clean and tidy. I booked a king size room, but was downgraded upon check in to a room with 2 single beds. As a 1.95 meter tall person, the single beds were too short. And with one of the walls being shared with an elevator shaft meant I didn't sleep very much at all. The staff weren't very well versed in English.

The hotel amenities are good. The biggest problem is communication. The hotel's website indicates they speak English. From my observation only about ten percent do so...

Comfortable stay in western Beijing
Good hotel option if you need to be in western Beijing. It's quite a distance to most attractions, plan on 1hr to most places. An 800m easy walk to the subway, taxis organised within minutes by concierge. A mix-up at check-in resulted in a fold-away bed being setup in the room, the attendant didn't speak English so we let them proceed. Large very comfortable room with excellent bathroom, loved the massive walk-in shower. Quiet room which could have done with proper block-out blinds, in my room they finished 6" short of the window allowing a lot of light in the room. Bed was super comfortable! Free wifi with reasonable speed albeit a lot of sites are blocked in China (not the hotels fault). Breakfast in the buffet area was OK, large variety of food choices and types but generally lacklustre in taste. Check-out quick and efficient.

A horrible experience
Had to move twice -the first room smelled of paint (or chemicals). The second, even though the room (and the whole floor) were labeled non-smoking, would fill up with smoke in the mornings and evenings. Tobacco smoke was also unmistakable in the corridors. Moved again - same problems, possibly even worse.

Honestly, I wasn't impressed. My room smelt musty, the bathroom was dark, the bed was soft (although some might like that), and the view was directly on to the back of a building that turned out to be another wing of the hotel. Depressing.

Great hotel, but what's with the smoking?
Loved it. Beautiful and very comfortable. Wonderful buffet breakfast. Only complaint was the smoking on the non-smoking floor. Smelled of fresh cigarette smoke getting off elevator, and also smelled in our room. Coming through air vent or from hall, not sure. Also room carpet could use a shampooing.

Really enjoyed my stays in this hotel! It was so nice the first time I was in Beijing, that I came back and stayed there two more times before leaving China. The lobby is gorgeous and very inviting. The front desk staff and concierge staff are super friendly and helpful. One concierge went out of his way to go across the street with me to help me buy a cell phone SIM card when I had trouble speaking Chinese with the clerks there. The rooms are really beautiful, spacious and comfortable. My only problem was the slow internet, which was slightly better in one room than in another during another stay. The breakfast was super fantastic, really one of the best anywhere. I'd love to stay there again when I am in Beijing.

I really enjoy staying at this Holiday Inn. It has a beauitful lobby, fabulous breakfast buffet, super friendly and helpful staff and the rooms are lovely. My only problem was the slow internet, which I hope they will improve soon.

If you had business around Chang An West, I assume that you could do worse than this hotel. I guess that I was just expecting a hotel within an international chain to have counter staff who confidently speak English. If you don't speak Mandarin as well, some of your requests may fall into the language gaps.
