“Good base, good value”
Went on a family visit with wife and 3 children (10, 15 and 18). The Atlas hotel although not central is near the Vondelpark and we found everywhere easily accessible on foot or by the number 2 tram which stops nearby. Although my wife and I had been allocated a twin room (where the beds were at right angles and coudn't be pushed together!)a quick trip to reception - very helpful, and we were given a lovely double room. Although the breakfast buffet seems expensive by UK standards at 10 euros (free for the youngest)it did actually set us up for the day, and as I like plenty of coffee in the morning, eating out would have cost even more. At present the Vodelpark is being refurbished and the entrance nearest the hotel is closed so don't try and cut back to the hotel from the centre! All the children loved Amsterdam - there was something for everyone.
“Poor Hotel But Great Location”
I just returned from a five-night stay at the Atlas Hotel. Its location is great--150 feet from Vondel Park, Amsterdam's biggest park, and a short block from the tram line, which takes you anywhere you want to go. The hotel itself was dreadful. It has all the signs of a hotel where the management cares little about the guests. My room, #221, was tiny with rudimentary furnishings, stained carpet, a musty smell, and a ratty mattress on the bed. I've stayed in hotels of all types all over the world and have never found one that did not provide hand soap in the bathroom--until I hit the Atlas. Two of the four nights, bags of laundry were left in the hallway outside my room. It was as if the workers simply walked off the job. One day I returned to my room to find that my coffee cup and drink glass had not been washed/replaced with clean ones. As with the laundry, it simply looked like whoever was responsible for the job just left. Any hotel manager worth his salt would not allow such sloppiness. The included breakfast was uninspired and served in a small and overcrowded room. Here, too, service was lacking--the tray of lunch meat and cheese, which was the breakfast's "main course," was either out or nearly out two of the four days I ate there. Both coffee pots were empty one morning and nothing was done about refilling them until I asked that it be done. I was glad to get out of the Atlas Hotel!

Area:
Vondelpark, Amsterdam, Netherlands: This large grassy space is a great place to escape the bustle of the city. In summer Amsterdammers come here to stroll, jog, roller-skate, sunbathe, listen to free concerts and watch the buskers and childrens entertainers. The Nederlands Filmmuseum is a very popular cinema (free outdoor screenings in summer) with an excellent café restaurant. The Hollandse Manege is a charming period building and home to the Dutch Riding School.
