“Beautiful views, good price, great memories”
My husband and I stayed for 3 nights and wanted to stay longer. The hotel is a destination in itself. While it is a short ride from the centre of Amalfi, if you can plan your days around the bus schedule, you will love it! (The SITA buses also run frequently.) We didn't have a car and parking in Amalfi would have been difficult anyway. (early Sept) We had dinners at the hotel - lovely, on the balcony. We also strolled up to Pogerole and had dinner (an inexpensive and good dinner) at La Capannina. The walk into Amalfi is worth a try - lots of stairs, but you get a better feel for life on the cliffside. We never tried the hotel beach and used the public beach instead - though many seemed to like the hotel beach. Annie at reception (spoke english from Brooklyn) was a delight. She helped us with our trip to Pompeii, arranged a guide & car. She offered good advice. Our lunch at the hotel was outstanding. We sat overlooking Amalfi (through the Grotto). The service was excellent and the Citrus Risotto a unique treat. The pool is large, but not heated and you will want to swim when the sun is high. (It was cooler than the sea.) The room was large; all have balconies. The view fantastic. wifi in the lobby and bar areas. The decor is slightly dated, but the atmosphere in the evening is nice, people watching tv or playing cards or chatting in the bar area or on the porch. We enjoyed meeting other guests. We might go back; met guests who stayed there 25 years ago & keep coming back!
“Amazing view”
I would recommend this hotel to everyone, its a bit hard to get to because its high on the cliffs{there is a bus anyway} but its so worth it!The view is just amazing, one of the most beautifull coastlines in Europe! N.B.If you fly from Naples dont book your return flight early in the morning because there is no transport to take you there so early!
“Good deal in Amalfi town”
We hesistated to book initially because some of the reviews and the fact that the hotel was outside of town center. We chose Amalfi because we could hike some trails as well as swim on the beach or the hotel pool. Also it was cheaper than Positano. We stayed for 3 nights and were very happy. Had a very large room (really a suite) #609 with 2 balconies one massive (larger that our room). The hotel is out of the town center because it's on the cliff above the town. This is not a problem and actually gives you amazing views. The SITA bus and hotel bus take you from the town center up to the hotel or when you're more familiar you can walk up or down from the hotel via a series of stairs. Note: the private beach was NOT included in the price, it was 10 euros extra. We didn't go, we spent our beach time in Positano which was quite ordinary compared to Elba (San Andreas) or even Cinque Terre re: swimming. The hotel pool hours made it unusable for me as we didn't just hang out at the hotel from 8-5pm. Internet access was limited to using the hotel office computer after 7pm but it was free.
“Excellent”
The photos we saw of the hotel and views from the rooms looked too good to be true but as it turned out the vistas from our balcony and other common areas were fantastic. Staff was courteous and helpful. Breakfast was good and supper was excellent. We drove up and took the shuttle to town and back and even walked down to town twice. We stayed for three days but would have enjoyed staying longer.
“Loved it.”
Beautiful hotel in fantastic setting. Marvellous views. Friendly and efficient staff.
“What A lovely Hotel”
Absolutely loved this hotel! Staff were friendly and efficient, and the location was absolutely stunning. The Courtesy bus into Amalfi and to the beach was always on time, and was invaluable to us. We stayed on B&B basis and this was excellent as we enjoyed going out for dinner, and when we wanted to stay closer to "home" Tato (on site restaurant) was a great restaurant with breathtaking views. We did have the Half board meal once, and we were a little disappointed, so would suggest any of the restaurants in Amalfi, and you have to go to Gerry's up the road on more than one occasion!!! :-) The Pool was lovely, even though the sun disappears in the afternoon, and the snack bar was ideal for a lazy day catching rays. The only downside was our bed was uncomfortable. Truly great holiday!!
“A great basis for the Amalfi Coast”
Great scenic setting way up the cliffs with good 10 minute bus connections to/from Amalfi either by hotel van or more frequent local bus service (1E each way). From Amalfi bus/water service to all points worth seeing. Hotel is an older establishment but comfortable and well maintained, and food is good but offerings limited. Hotel away from bustle of tourists, Amalfi night life is limited (which is fine with us) but if you want night life, stay in Sorento which we found too big. We were a 25 person AHI tour (highly recommend) group based at Excelsior and covered the entire coast and islands in 7 days.
“Great stay”
The hotel was awesome and the staff was tremendous. The views and the room was fantastic. My only suggestion was that they should add more shuttle service times and the mattress's were a bit stiff. But I would definately come back to this hotel in a minute!
“Grand Hotel Excelsior Hotel”
First thing to say; Amazing view from Hotel down to the harbour and pebble beach, possibly best location of this price range. All the staff are lovely and very polite, very professional and friendly, and most if not all staff are fluent in all European languages. We only booked half board, but I know that all the food in the hotel is amazing. I can't complain, and I eat in good restaurants in London! Given the location, I think we saw a lot more than those in the bay area. Basically, there are hotels in the bay area, and hotels up the mountain as it were. If you want a *fuller* experience, you should try the Excelsior as they are located 15 mins bus journey up the mountain side, you see more, you are located Nr. a small village-like-place called Pogerola which allows for a more Provincial experience if you like! There is also a nice walk down to Amalfi, which goes right through the Lemon groves all the way down. The only thing I would be wary of is if you're renting a vehicle DRIVE CAREFULLY!!!!!!!!! Italian drivers have somewhat carefree driving style! Bus to the beach is only 7-8 mins, also, you have to pay for the beach chairs and parasol. A little cheeky, but you get used to paying over the odds for most things on the Coast. Make sure you take plenty of euros!!
“Best View in Amalfi”
My husband and I recently stayed at the Excelsior and were pleasantly surprised at the hotel's comfort and beautiful views, including a wonderful pool and garden area and impressive dining options. Although the hotel is older and not sparkling in cleansiness, it has a unique charm and graet cliff-top location that gives you a great view from any room. The staff was friendly although the sevice was not exemplary, and the narrow, winding road to the top of the cliff where the hotel is located isolates the guests somewhat, there is a shuttle bus service to the city center several times a day. Overall, we were very happy with our choice of staying at the Excelsior!

Area:
Amalfi, Italy: A charming cluster of pastel houses, shops, cafés and watchtowers, Amalfi seems little more than a village. However it was a great naval power and a wealthy trading republic in medieval times. Its dramatic setting in jagged cliffs cloaked in vineyards is best seen from a boat. Amalfis star turn is a gorgeous cathedral with great bronze doors and lacy cloisters. The nearby village of Atrani is quiet and pretty, with a fine Byzantine church.
