"Quiet, secluded rooms"
This is a lovely and hidden gem with fantastic views of the ocean and a beautiful, almost deserted beach just a short walk away. No, there are no activities or amenities or restaurant onsite, but if you're looking for a beautiful, quiet place where you can just relax and enjoy the sand and water and sun, Surf Side is fantastic. We come back every year.

While the service of the main components of the hotel were good, we had a few surprises. First, there was a $10/day/pp charge for cleaning, eventhough we never had the room cleaned, only required new towels. Second, it was required for us to purchase $50 Griffin Dollars/pp. Griffin's is a restaurant on the premise ... food is good, service very slow and they do not open for breakfast.

"One of the best hotels I've been in"
This hotel was very close to perfect, and is perfect if you don’t have unrealistic expectations. There’s definitely an old-world feel to the hotel. Concierge staff, who can truly make or break the experience, will go out of their way to get you, or instruct you how to get, just about anything you wanted. They’ll book just about anything you want. The room was very spacious, classy, and comfortable. The hotel grounds were immaculate, which adds to the value of the open-air free breakfast and free wine hours – both very classy. Although not on the beach, there are many advantages to the hotel's location if you’re the adventurous type (which I am) because you can easily get anywhere on the island in 40 minutes or less via ferry or bus (also cheaper than taxis). The pool isn’t big, but that’s a blessing in disguise because so few people use it (most guests don’t appear to be the pool type anyway). My wife and I squeezed in a few refreshing dips at night or at wine hour with it all to ourselves. The only knocks on the hotel are forgivable. First, the air conditioning in the room didn’t make the room super-cool, and at times the room could feel a bit on the warm side. Second, with the immaculate gardens the hotel has to try hard to control ants, and you may see a few in places, including your room. Guests have to make sure not to leave food open in their rooms which will attract the ants. Last, and my only real beef, is that it would be nice if the hotel had an hourly c

"friendly old inn"
i think this is the best place i saw from which to see the island. it's old, quaint and has lots of interesting people who stay here. it's not fancy and i would have preferred to sleep with the windows open, but Rachel (caretaker) was lovely and staying in a place that embodies the history of the town is great. if you do not expect fancy you will hopefully be as delighted as the other characters who choose this place. also, ideally located for taking the buses and ferry to see the rest of the island and walking distance (15 minutes up and down hills) from one of the island's nicest protected beaches and one of the best places to snorkel.
