"Close to Ueno Station"
I chose this hotel because it was close to UENO station but not too expensive, and we had a very early start the next morning catching the shinkansen. I would not recommend this hotel for a prolonged stay; the room was very small, but adequate for our needs as we only used it as a stopping off point for one night. The staff were very friendly. The hotel is private and quiet; it is on the opposite side of the tracks to UENO park and the markets at Ameyoko.

"Cannot beat the price for this location"
Micro double rooms were small for two people but the location is premium for the price and the staff was helpful. It is two blocks from Inaricho subway station and four blocks from Ueno which is probably the best place to stay in Tokyo because of the parks museums and shopping.

"Sound budget accommodation in good location."
This hotel is in a highly accessible, quiet location only 5 minutes walk from Ueno Station with plenty of convenience stores and food outlets nearby. Also very close to subway station. However, while the room is quite comfortable and a good size for Tokyo, the hotel needs renovation. Carpets in hallways were stained and there is no regular room service.

The hotel has great location, and near several restaurants. But the room is small and can only fit one person. Anyway, good experience and good hotel.

"Close to the nice Ueno Park"
Comfortable and quite spacious room, futon bedding proved pretty good night's sleep. Although staff speaks only little English it is enough to communicate, very helpful. Great localization for Ueno Park and surrounding shrines as well as temples. Close to restaurants and main shopping street. Would recommend it for a couple.

"Very Authentic and Traditional Experience"
I booked this hotel because it was cheap and had was at a good location (600m/8min to Iriya station, 800m/11min to Asakusa station, 1.2km/15min to JR Uguisudani). The room is small compared to a hotel in the US, but was very reasonable compared to the other hotels I stayed at. The inn felt very much like staying at a Japanese home, as the owners seemed to be an old couple and the decor on the lobby floor felt very much like a home, with the dining room and the kitchen next to the tatami rooms. The staff spoke serviceable English, enough to let me know that I needed to change into the slippers at the entrance and store my shoes in the locker, and that I needed to leave the keys when I leave in the morning so that the room can be cleaned. On the day that I checked out, I had a flight late at night, so I asked to have my baggage stay at the inn until evening, and the owners let me put my big checked luggages in their small tatami room, for no charge, which showed me their dedication to service. One thing to note is to be sure to ask about breakfast ahead of time, as you have to schedule it ahead of time. It cost around 850yen and it was hot and filling. I got the western style room with a bathroom, but if you choose a tatami room, it will be shared bathrooms.

Pocket Guide: Tokyo Ueno 2 stars Hotels

This area offers a glimpse of what life was like before the economic boom of the 1970s and 1980s. Neighboring Asakusa, it is best known for the Ameya-yokocho Arcade, a busy market with interesting stalls. Ueno-koen, a sprawling park with monuments, zoo, pagodas, and a pond, is a must-do. Museums and galleries abound in the area.
