Its heart is the Römerberg, with the 13th-century cathedral of St Bartholomäus and the gables of the Römerplatz. The 12th-century palace chapel is now part of the Historisches Museum. The house where Goethe was born on Grosse Hirschgraben is now a museum. The stock exchange is on Börsenplatz, with many upmarket boutiques nearby.
